Nicholsons is delighted to announce that one of our Senior Ecological Consultants, Sam Reynolds, has just been published in the scientific journal Animal Behaviour. Alongside Claudia Wascher, Sam reviews vocal communication in corvids and how this is crucial in understanding the evolution of social structures, mating systems and group dynamics in this species. Click on the link below to read the full article.

Good news! Human scientists have become smart enough 🤓 to recognize that there can be different types of consciousness; therefore, animals are conscious too. Alleluia! Animals feel pain and joy; they play, show curiosity, collaborate with each other and across species to achieve their goals, trick each other to steal food or mates, use tools, ask for help, and learn at a speed that many humans cannot match. Many of them are self-aware and can pass the 'mirror test' (recognizing themselves in a mirror), a task that human children can only achieve after reaching 2 years of age. Now, we need legislators to accept this knowledge and start taking animals' interests into consideration when crafting policies. https://lnkd.in/drcXCgYH #animalprotection #animalconsciousness #animalrights #environmentalscience

🐾 Animal Behavior Deep Dive 🐾 Recent studies in animal behavior have unveiled fascinating insights into the complex lives of various species: Chimpanzee Urination Synchrony Researchers at Kyoto University have discovered that the urge to urinate can be socially influenced among chimpanzees, similar to contagious yawning or laughter. Over 600 hours of observation of 20 captive chimpanzees revealed that lower-ranking individuals are more likely to urinate after observing higher-ranking members do so. This behavior suggests a deep-rooted evolutionary mechanism aimed at enhancing social cohesion within groups. Source: The Times and The Sunday Times Deciphering Animal Communication with AI The Earth Species Project, in collaboration with researchers at McGill University, is leveraging advanced AI tools to decode animal communications. By analyzing vocalizations from species such as zebra finches, Hawaiian crows, and St. Lawrence beluga whales, the project aims to develop rudimentary dictionaries to facilitate better understanding and protection of these animals. This initiative holds promise for transforming interspecies communication and promoting environmental conservation. Source: AP News These developments not only deepen our understanding of animal behavior but also highlight the intricate social structures and communication methods that many species possess. Such insights are crucial for informing conservation efforts and fostering a greater appreciation for the complexities of animal societies. #AnimalBehavior #WildlifeResearch #Conservation #AIInScience

📑 Highly Cited Review The current work reviews some of the literature on the multifaceted nature of the human–animal relationship; describes the key role of empathy, attachment and anthropomorphism in human–animal relationships; seeks to depict how these psychological processes are distorted and dysfunctional in animal hoarding, with highly detrimental effects on both animal and human well-being. "Current debates on the concept of a Culture of Care show that the animal perspective – that is, their agency in the context of experimental research – is largely ignored. It is a major shortcoming of the concept that consideration of animals does not go beyond a broad discussion of wellbeing... If a Culture of Care were to develop in this direction, science could begin to break free from the human-centered viewpoint which still permits, legally and socially, the use of sentient animals in research."
