New report from Battle Creek Alliance and Center for Sustainable Economy. For Immediate Release August 27, 2024 Contact: Marily Woodhouse, Director, Battle Creek Alliance Phone: (530) 474-5803 Email: battlecreekalliance@gmail.com John Talberth, Ph.D., Senior Economist, Center for Sustainable Economy Phone: (510) 384-5724 Email: jtalberth@sustainable-economy.org Re: New Report Reveals Unregulated Emissions Sabotaging California’s Climate Goals A new report by the Center for Sustainable Economy focuses on two California Counties to expose a critical gap in California’s climate strategy: the unregulated greenhouse gas emissions (GHG) from the state’s logging industry. Despite California’s reputation as a climate leader, California does not monitor GHG emissions from the logging and wood products sector and has no plans to do so. Erroneously assuming that logging-related emissions are offset by future forest growth or the substitution of wood products for more carbon intensive materials, California ignores the fact that logging practices emit far more carbon than the natural forests they replace, significantly contributing to climate instability. John Talberth underscores the urgency: “If California wants to preserve its reputation as a climate leader, it is essential for Governor Newsom and other elected officials to reject false narratives that allow Big Timber to overrun the state’s forestlands with intensive logging activities that generate significant greenhouse gas emissions while making the land more susceptible to fire, floods, and heat waves.” · The report estimates that logging and associated road building in Shasta and Siskiyou counties alone emit over 4 million metric tons of CO2 equivalent per year–comparable to the annual emissions from 883,000 gas-powered passenger vehicles. The report calculates that these activities are likely to generate between $487 million and $1.4 billion in climate damages each year, an amount far more than any revenues generated by logging and wood products. Despite this, the state has yet to implement regulations that would account for and curb these emissions. Marily Woodhouse, Director of Battle Creek Alliance in Shasta County, emphasizes the disparity in regulation: “The timber industry has long operated outside the regulations governing other sectors, worsening climate change in California’s timber counties. It’s time for state leaders to enact strong regulations to count and control emissions from logging. California must walk the talk as a climate leader.”

California’s carbon deadline is approaching, but activists worry that piping millions of tons of carbon dioxide to the Central Valley could lead to disaster. Hundreds of miles of pipeline must be built—and quickly—if California is to meet its fast-approaching deadline for removing millions of tons of climate-altering carbon dioxide from the atmosphere. #sustainability #sustainable #ecofriendly #sustainableliving #environment #zerowaste #energy #climatechange #nature #gogreen #recycle #savetheplanet #plasticfree #eco #reuse #design #green #organic #carbon #handmade #vegan #architecture #innovation #renewableenergy #earth #climateaction #recycling #circulareconomy

It was an honour to be on the panel at the Climate Action Summit beside David Steen UK Green Building Council (UKGBC) and Louise Rogers @BE-ST where we very much looked at holistic transformation of the construction industry. Our collective message for anyone to take away is that we need to avoid carbon tunnelling and even narrower still only talk about operational carbon and avoid embodied carbon in the conversation. There is no use just talking about passive house standards (good sound physics may it be!) if we use toxic materials to achieve the said energy targets, and poison our air with volatile organic compounds (VOCs). We would not survive if climate crisis if we do not design with biocentrism and biodiversity in mind, taking into account all the other species including those in the soil and pollinators, we will have no food. We have everything we need, and are surrounded by resources, but knowing that they are finite we can better utilise them, setting up circular economy and reduce waste. We need to consider the whole life cycle of the built environment, longevity of what we construct and whether it can be deconstructed at the end of life to have reusable components. There are methods and means from the way we live, the way we build and the way we think. As David rightly said we know ‘What’ we have to do and it’s ‘How’ we achieve the targets that policy, regulation as well as resources to support the legislation needs to come in to push for change. We even have the solutions as part of the ‘How’ just need the political will to catch up with the industry demonstrations of what is already possible and push for general societal change. I was very taken by @Satwat Rehmen co-chair of Just Transition Commission (pictured) who advocates for zero poverty and learning from previous failures to build community wealth and wellbeing and strong social infrastructure. Given the poor track record is it possible to have Just Transition? She said “we won’t if we don’t try”. We can all do with the positivity and do what we can from small changes around us by nurturing ourselves and those around us towards holistic transformation - doing our part for climate action. #ClimateAction #ClimateActionSummit #JustTransition #ClimateJustice #SEDA #BuiltEnvironment #decarbonise

Solutions for Climate Change & other Environmental issues in Gilgit-Baltistan: Reviving Sustainability & Quality of Life. Environmental issues in Gilgit-Baltistan (GB) stem from a confluence of factors, notably overpopulation and resource depletion exacerbated by the absence of renewable energy sources. While GB boasts significant potential for electricity production via hydropower generation, governmental inertia hinders progress in this regard. Research underscores the urgent need to address climate change and the pollution of water, air, and soil in GB by enhancing the quality of life and promoting green initiatives, particularly through afforestation and indigenous plantations in urban areas. Two decades ago, the landscape and water quality between Gilgit and Skardu were pristine, with drinkable streams meandering through areas devoid of modern infrastructure like reinforced concrete buildings, markets, or industrial activities. However, rapid urbanization and industrialization have led to the proliferation of RCC structures, commercial enterprises, and small-scale factories, accelerating environmental degradation. The resulting climate disruptions manifest in various forms, including glacial lake outburst floods (GLOFs), landslides, rockfalls, river pollution, and widespread health issues. To mitigate these challenges, it is imperative to elevate the living standards of GB's populace, especially in densely populated urban centers like the old city areas. This entails thorough stream cleaning, modernizing infrastructure using sustainable engineering models, and prioritizing green spaces and corridors akin to global sustainable cities. Planting indigenous trees and fruit-bearing plants, along with employing local materials like clay and stone for construction, can further enhance sustainability while preserving the region's natural ecosystem. https://lnkd.in/deBaUiiY

Today is #WorldEnvironmentDay. This year’s theme of "Our land. Our future. We are #GenerationRestoration" emphasises the importance of restoring land, combating desertification and enhancing resilience to drought. Currently, the United Nations Environment Programme (UNEP) reports that up to 40% of the world's land is degraded, impacting around 3.2 billion people globally due to desertification. Projections suggest that by 2050 over three-quarters of the world's population will be affected by drought. Through sustainable site selection, prioritising brownfield sites, restorative practices that enhance biodiversity, rainwater harvesting and other water management strategies, we help our clients to address this challenge. We also contribute directly to land restoration, by offsetting our organisational carbon emissions through regeneration projects as part of our decarbonisation strategy. For more details on our net zero commitment, see our website 👇. #MakingSpacesWork Tetra Tech High Performance Buildings Group | Cosentini Associates | Glumac | Hoare Lea

As the Carbon Manager at Wild + Pine I am responsible for connecting our projects to climate financing and delivering high-integrity assets to organizations participating in our forest restoration projects. Wild + Pine believes that there is a community of forward-thinking businesses that are ready to invest in climate resiliency and nature. However, there is currently a lack of available projects ready to receive and leverage this investment into meaningful impact and do so with clear traceability and transparency on the outcomes of that impact. We are actively developing natural assets in Western Canada through the execution of afforestation-based restoration projects on degraded land. These forest assets act as a carbon-negative “facility” inside of your organization's financial portfolio, reducing the need to treat emissions as a perpetual liability to be serviced through offsetting. As we develop natural assets in Western Canada, our focus is on robust additionally, scientific rigor, and minimized risk in the recovery of forest habitats. We execute projects on unproductive land that has been degraded through decades of industrial, agricultural, or development activities. Returning these landscapes to a healthy forest has biodiversity benefits, increases carbon sequestration capacity, and supports local community economics as we move towards a green economy. We are currently inviting participation in three different project types: StoneWoods Forest Carbon - Our turnkey grouped carbon project that will deliver high-integrity nature-based carbon removals and other registered environmental attributes. Resiliency portfolio - Smaller projects that may not meet the scale required for carbon registration, but still hold tremendous value in specific ecological impact areas. Bespoke - Our expertise lies in the restoration of forest landscapes - if you have ideas on creative ways to leverage nature to achieve your goals we are excited to pioneer some new solutions with you! We are actively seeking climate leaders to invest in our projects and join the work already underway in our portfolio. I would love to connect with you to discuss how you can leverage the power of Canadian forests to meet your climate and sustainability goals.
