🚨 Now is the time to put science centre stage. We can’t out-argue rising temperatures. We can’t out-debate melting glaciers. We can’t out-vote extreme weather. The climate crisis won’t wait for consensus. We need: 🌳 Bold action, grounded in science. 🌳 Solutions built on evidence, not opinions. 🌳 Progress measured in data, not headlines. It’s time to build, fund, and scale what works. From the lab to the field, from markets to ministries - science belongs everywhere decisions are made. Open Forest Protocol CEO Frederic Fournier will be heading to the HackSummit on May 15-16, to join 850 ClimateTech founders, funders, and operators building what matters most. At OFP, we’re scaling generation of the highest integrity carbon credits, for all projects around the world and we are ready to put our foot forward and put science center stage.

👏 Smallholder farmers could reforest between 45–150 million hectares globally, depending on scenario and support systems. 🌲 Who are Smallholder Farmers? - Typically defined as farming less than 2 hectares. - There are an estimated 500 million smallholder farms globally. - These farmers manage approximately 400–500 million hectares of agricultural land. 🌳 How Much of This Land Could Support Reforestation? Of course, smallholder land is primarily used for food production—but many practices like agroforestry, silvopasture, riparian planting, and assisted natural regeneration (ANR) allow integration of trees without displacing crops or livelihoods. Based on studies by FAO, CIFOR-ICRAF, and recent UN Decade on Ecosystem Restoration reports, it is realistically feasible to reforest or restore 10–30% of smallholder-managed land without harming food security. Estimated Reforestable Land via Smallholders 🔽 Scenario % of Land Hectares: 🌲 Conservative: 10%, 45–50 million ha 🌲 Moderate (realistic): 20%, 90–100 million ha 🌲 Optimistic: 30%, 135–150 million ha These hectares could support agroforestry systems for income + carbon sequestration, projects on degraded fallow land, buffer zone reforestation around farms, watersheds, and slopes, and participation in community-led carbon projects. Note: *This does not include land that smallholders influence through cooperatives or communal holdings, which could further expand this number. *Realizing this potential requires access to finance, extension services, carbon markets, and trustworthy MRV infrastructure—where tools like Open Forest Protocol can play a catalytic role. #forests #climate #climatechange #climateaction #sustainability #smalllandowners #smallfarmers #agroforestry #reforestation #regeneration #restoration #earth #planet #hectares #trees #greenfinance #carbonfinance

When climate effects emerge, smallholder landowners often suffer the most. ⬇️ 👉 The monthly rainfall in parts of Thailand during monsoon season is 40-50% higher than normal compared to the past few decades due to climate change. For local communities, schools, and farmers, this is devastating for livelihoods. Ground2Gut by BTLLAgroforestry and FoodInnovate in Thailand is taking a hands on approach to mitigating flood damage through agroforestry: "We are working at the field scale that campaigning rural-urban co-development to improve local livelihoods using climate-adaptive agroforestry for floods and water-retention areas during annual floods." And they are using Open Forest Protocol to measure their work 🤝 🌳 As a three hectare project, they join an estimated 500 million smallholder farmers around the world who, if given proper support and financing, could reforest between 45–150 million hectares globally. From tree to technology, we are proud to be working with those on the ground putting the work in to reforest and care for our planet. This is where data becomes impact and effort turns into financing ⬇️ #forest #tree #thailand #project #climate #climatechange #carbon #carbonfinance #carboncredits #mrv #nature #naturetech #sustainability #environment #green #greenfinance #earth #agroforestry #agriculture

🌿 Indigenous Peoples (IPs) are vital for nature conservation. 📜 Global agreements acknowledge their knowledge, need to participate in decision making and their right to compensation. 🔎 Yet, IPs are often marginalized in research and technology development, relegated to low-level roles, or tokenized in FPIC processes, community engagement, and capacity building. 🌱 Growing corporate demand for high-quality nature data, the rise of nature-tech startups, and the growing use of AI in conservation highlight the value of this data - and an opportunity. 💡 Can data rights empower IPs beyond stakeholder status, granting them true ownership and benefit-sharing? For the last 6 months WarīNkwī Flores, Constanza Gomez Mont Lauren Serota and I have spoken to hundreds of technologists, Indigenous rights representatives, nature based solutions champions, corporations and AI-companies helping us to refine the vision and plan. 💡 We think that building a Data Governance Framework for nature related Indigenous People's data is central to ensuring their equal participation and fair compensation across environmental markets. 🙏🏻 So many of you have already helped us refine the scope and connected us with other brilliant groups and individuals who have worked in this space for years. We have so much to learn from each other. Together with NaturaTech LAC and Kinray Hub: Indigenous-led R&D we're kicking this off as this work NEEDS TO HAPPEN. We are still looking for partners that can support the work - and our self-imposed deadline of COP30 is approaching fast. Find me at the NatureTech Summit today - or reach out in DM's - if you want to get involved. The list of organizations raising their hand to support is growing. We are proud to be a part of the Nature Tech Collective Biodiversity Sector Map 🌳 One of many organizations doing groundbreaking work around the world, it's incredible to see the dedication for spearheading biodiversity innovation. Lets keep protecting our shared home, together 🌍
🚀 🌱Now live: The Nature Tech Biodiversity Sector Map! We’re harnessing the energy of #NatureTechWeek to unveil our inaugural nature tech sector map for biodiversity, developed with Conservation International. This visual guide maps 600+ organizations driving biodiversity innovation worldwide, bringing greater clarity, collaboration & impact to the sector. Download the sector map here >>> https://lnkd.in/eRicadxh What we found: 🔍 Tech gaps: 200+ orgs focus on monitoring, but data integration & interpretation lag - limiting real-world impact. 🧬🛰️ Despite impressive advancements in technologies like eDNA, bioacoustics, and remote sensing, practitioners face barriers to harnessing them fully, such as data interpretation, cost and implementation 🌍 Biodiversity records are unevenly distributed across species (taxonomic bias) and locations (geographic bias), creating blind spots in conservation decision-making 🎯 Target-setting challenges: A lack of standardized guidance and diverse stakeholder needs make it harder for organizations to translate biodiversity data into actionable insights for different groups. 🤝 Democratization more a promise than reality? AI, camera traps & citizen science remain costly & complex. How do we bridge these gaps?
