Some heroes fight on the battlefield. Policarpa Salavarrieta fought in the shadows. As a spy, revolutionary, and fearless patriot, she risked everything to help Colombia fight for independence from Spanish rule. Born in the late 1700s, Policarpa used her intelligence, courage, and connections to gather secret information for the revolutionary forces. Disguised as a seamstress in royalist homes, she eavesdropped on military officials, smuggled weapons, and recruited others to join the cause. But when she was caught in 1817, she refused to beg for mercy, instead, she used her final moments to denounce tyranny and call for freedom. -She worked as a spy, passing crucial intelligence to revolutionaries. -She helped arm and recruit rebels, playing a key role in the fight for independence. -She faced execution with defiance, shouting for Colombia’s freedom as she was led to her death. Her famous last words? “Although I am young, I have more courage than you, and I will show you how to die for freedom.” Policarpa Salavarrieta is remembered as a national hero of Colombia, proving that revolutions aren’t just fought with weapons, they’re fought with courage, intelligence, and unwavering belief in justice.
