Winning slowly on climate change is the same as losing - so we always need to accelerate action. Five years in, I'm thrilled to see #TheClimatePledge’s 525+ signatories doing just that by making real progress towards net-zero carbon emissions by 2040. Ambition on this scale was never going to be easy, and when it comes to climate action there is always more to be done. But we are learning every step of the way and today celebrating the #TheClimatePledge community – now five years old! Once this group reaches net-zero carbon, BRODIE conservatively estimates that the GHGs avoided would equate to more than 2.5 metric gigatons of CO2e annually. The BBC has released its first Climate Transition Plan, outlining its roadmap to achieve Net Zero emissions by 2050. This initiative is part of the Corporation’s commitment to sustainability, not only within its own operations but across the wider media industry. Achieving net zero means no longer adding to the total amount of greenhouse gases in the atmosphere. This ambitious goal is critical to limiting global temperature rises to 1.5C by 2100, as agreed under the 2015 Paris climate agreement. The UK aims for net zero by 2050, with significant milestones such as achieving fully clean electricity by 2035 and making 80% of new car sales zero emission by 2030. Globally, about 145 countries are working towards similar goals, but timelines and strategies vary. While countries like China and the US have substantial plans, achieving these targets demands more than just policy—it requires innovation, commitment, and individual action.
