🚨 Anomaly detected: an 84% increase in dark activity in the Baltic Sea. Windward identified a sharp spike in AIS dark activity by Chinese-affiliated vessels, mainly near Ust-Luga, Russia, from January 7-14, 2025. Fifteen vessels turned off their AIS, significantly higher than expected, continuing an upward trend beginning in July 2024. The timing of this surge aligns with the deployment of the new "Nordic Warden" AI monitoring system, launched by the UK and Northern European countries, to track shadow fleet vessels and safeguard undersea infrastructure. The activity pattern is strikingly similar to the Eagle S, the vessel implicated in sabotaging the EstLink2 power cable in December 2024, suggesting a growing trend of deceptive shipping practices (DSPs) in the region. These findings emphasize the ongoing risks to maritime security and critical infrastructure as vessels turn to DSPs like dark activity, location (GNSS) manipulation, and identity tampering to obscure their movements. Are we seeing a new wave of tactics to evade detection? Read our recent blog to learn how identity tampering and other DSPs are threatening underwater infrastructure. 👉 https://hubs.la/Q032rhKw0 #MaritimeSecurity #UnderwaterInfrastructure #GlobalTrade

Critical underwater infrastructure sabotage strikes again, this time off Taiwan's coast, but there’s a big twist to this latest incident... On January 3, Taiwanese authorities accused a Chinese freighter of severing a subsea communications cable near Keelung. What initially appeared to involve only one vessel, Xing Shun 39, has unraveled into a much more complex tale of identity tampering. Windward’s Maritime AI™ insights reveal: 🚢 Four seemingly distinct vessels, each with its own set of overlapping and differing names, IMOs, MMSIs, call signs, and flags, exhibit overlapping behavioral patterns ⚠️ One of these vessels, Xing Shun 39, has been flagged by Windward as a high-security risk since April 2024 for IMO spoofing, identity changes, and dark activities 🛰️ Shared routes and synchronized AIS transmissions, perhaps from more than one device on board, suggest a sophisticated effort to obscure the true culprit With commercial vessels increasingly linked to such incidents, the line between commercial and paramilitary operations is becoming dangerously blurred. Windward’s latest blog breaks down the incident, reviews the data, and explores how proactive intelligence can mitigate future risks 👉 https://hubs.la/Q031TL7Q0 #MaritimeSecurity #UnderwaterCables #UnderwaterInfrastructure

Ensuring Resilient PNT Testing: Safeguarding Commercial and Civilian Applications 📝 Amazingly, a catastrophic incident has not yet occurred. And unfortunately, it seems to be a question of “when”, not “if”. The ongoing armed conflicts happening in Ukraine, the Middle East, and Southeast Asia are resulting in never-before-seen levels of interference — specifically jamming and spoofing. These GPS spoofing incidents serve as a stark wake-up call for the importance of resilient PNT testing across commercial and civilian applications. By embracing rigorous testing protocols, stakeholders can fortify PNT systems against malicious attacks, safeguarding critical infrastructure, economic stability, and public safety in an increasingly interconnected world. #ResilientPNT #PNT #Jamming #Spoofing #Simulation #GNSS Safran - Navigation & Timing

𝐒𝐭𝐫𝐞𝐧𝐠𝐭𝐡𝐞𝐧𝐢𝐧𝐠 𝐃𝐞𝐧𝐦𝐚𝐫𝐤 𝐀𝐠𝐚𝐢𝐧𝐬𝐭 𝐇𝐲𝐛𝐫𝐢𝐝 𝐓𝐡𝐫𝐞𝐚𝐭𝐬 As Danish Minister, Torsten Schack Pedersen highlights the importance of learning from Norway's preparedness plan, the urgency of fortifying Denmark's public and governmental systems against hybrid threats cannot be overstated. This week’s attack involving 74 drones targeting critical infrastructure in Ukraine serves as a stark reminder of the evolving nature of modern warfare. Today's conflicts exploit vulnerabilities, underscoring the need for proactive and targeted solutions. Denmark’s political agenda must prioritize implementing robust defense measures such as Counter-Unmanned Aerial Systems (C-UAS). These systems are not just technological upgrades but essential pillars of modern security strategies, ensuring the protection of infrastructure, institutions, and citizens against emerging threats. The message is clear: Denmark must act decisively to enhance its readiness for the challenges ahead. Supporting politicians as they take bold steps to bolster national preparedness is a collective responsibility - one that is vital for a safer, more secure future. Let’s ensure a safer Denmark! #HybridThreats #CUAS #NationalSecurity #Preparedness #HybrideTrusler #NationalSikkerhed #Beredskab #TruslerModDanmark #Luftforsvar #Sikkerhedspolitik
