The consummate hotelier is a multi-faceted human being. When I started hotel school 35 years ago, our FO Instructor, Ms Nicci would passionately tell us that a receptionist is at least 5 individuals rolled into one - she called it DRIPS. A receptionist must be a Diplomat, a Record Keeper, an Information Source, a Psychologist and a Salesperson. The same could be said of any hotel staff member who comes into contact with guests. They then go on to become career hoteliers. The consummate hotelier epitomizes the essence of a multi-faceted human being. In the hospitality industry, a hotelier must wear many hats, seamlessly transitioning from a gracious host to a shrewd businessperson, from an attentive service provider to an innovative marketer. They possess a deep understanding of customer service, displaying empathy and cultural sensitivity, while also being adept in managing operations, finances, and staff. Their role demands a blend of interpersonal skills, creativity, and strategic thinking, making them a living tapestry of diverse talents. This versatility is not just beneficial but necessary in the dynamic environment of a hotel, where each day brings new challenges and opportunities. Thus, the consummate hotelier's multifaceted nature is not just a trait but a professional imperative, enabling them to excel and adapt in an industry that is as much about people as it is about profit.

Why did you join the hotel industry? "Meeting interesting people" is not a good reason to join the hotel industry, notwithstanding this is what what most hoteliers will answer when someone mentions this. If you should meet someone interesting and I say IF.......that may be fun in the moment, but overall what does this truly add to your work experience? Nothing.....kan? For me personally, the real advantage to working in the hotel industry is the wide range of skills and experience you would acquire for use, should you choose a career change that represented advancement in either salary or position or both (these do not necessarily go hand in hand). It is also quite useful for our personal lives too.....wifey merajuk, no problem, we can iron the laundry and make the beds. Hungry at midnight? No problem, some of us can cook a delicious fried rice, better than Uncle Roger or Uncle Soon 😅
