The Liberal Democrats launched the first of the party manifestos today. It includes a cross-government plan to end all forms of homelessness, plus a significant social housing programme and the scrapping of the archaic Vagrancy Act. With homelessness at record levels these manifesto proposals would put us on the path to tackling this growing crisis and offer hope to the thousands facing the injustice of being without a safe home. An excerpt from the article particularly the fact that $24 billion in taxpayer funds has been invested to improve the homelessness crisis but the number of homeless has actually grown. Where else is this happening? Not all homeless individuals are addicts or desire to be homeless. Unaffordable housing options, mental illness, poverty including among seniors or unforeseen financial setbacks can be causes. It sounds as if the $24 billion didn’t adequately address root causes. A plan is to fine homeless violators which is interesting because most homeless have money issues. The latest count showed roughly 180,000 people in the state were experiencing homelessness on any given night. The Supreme Court recently heard arguments in #GrantsPassVJohnson, the most important case impacting homelessness of the past 40 years. The case will determine whether arresting, fining, ticketing, or otherwise punishing people for sleeping outdoors on public property when they have nowhere else to go violates the Eighth Amendment of the U.S. Constitution, which prohibits excessive bail, fines, and cruel and unusual punishments. Domestic violence is a leading cause of homelessness. Many survivors flee their homes to escape violence. But safe, affordable housing is extremely limited, often forcing them to make impossible choices between sleeping outside or suffering continued violence. Housing is safety for survivors. The Supreme Court will soon reach a decision in the #JohnsonVGrantsPass case, which will answer the pivotal question of whether all people in America are truly protected by the Constitution. This case holds profound implications for the rights and dignity of our most vulnerable citizens, particularly those experiencing homelessness. We cannot treat the most vulnerable among us as disposable. It is imperative that we recognize and uphold the humanity and rights of every individual. The only proven solutions to homelessness are providing people with housing and services. Criminalizing homelessness only exacerbates the issue and undermines the fabric of our communities. We stand firmly in support of #HousingNotHandcuffs. We believe in creating compassionate, sustainable solutions that address the root causes of homelessness and provide real opportunities for stability and growth. Let's advocate for justice, dignity, and housing for all.
