O'zapft is! Last Saturday the Oktoberfest Kicked off in Munich! 🍻🚛   The largest folk festival in the world has been held in Munich every year since 1810. The mega event attracts around 6 million visitors from all over the world every year. On the opening weekend alone, 1 million guests attended the Wiesn this year - an impressive number that brings with it enormous logistical challenges!   Here are some impressive figures that illustrate the logistical effort involved: - 7 million litres of beer are served during the Oktoberfest. And just like that our Spirit of Christmas stand is built!! The stand is not as beautiful as I would like but every inch of retail space has to pay for itself so Maximalism is the look! We crammed it until it creaked. For various reasons it’s our first Spirit in five years. Let’s hope it’s a good one. It’s already day two and things seem to be going well. We don’t do retail fairs these days as our business model has changed. However, they can be useful for a number of reasons. Firstly it’s great fun to build your own retail space. What happens on our stand over the next week also happens in our customers’ shops, galleries, garden centres, vistor attractions etc etc. It’s also great for direct customer feedback. We learn a lot about our products speaking directly to customers - Which products are the most popular? Does the packaging work? Are there holes in our ranges? What could we develop next? Beyond the product information, the people watching and customer interaction is fascinating. Watching as herds of customers follow each other around in the same direction, listening to them thinking out loud, seeing them buying into the product, watching them pull out massive lists of presents that needs filling, explaining to them how the products work, building up a crowd like a sideshow performer and then, my personal favourite, making sales! Large retail fairs have always been a source of learning for us. There was a time, over a decade ago, when we would do more than 25 shows in the run up to Christmas. Nowadays we do none. Going back after a five year absence as a very different and slightly larger company will be interesting. It’s also good for other team members to be involved and interact with our end users. It’s hard to say if in person events of this type will be around much longer! At the end of the show I’m sure we will all think that the experience has been fun and exhausting, with a lot of lessons learnt about our business model, our brand and what to do with it next!
