Luxembourg #SpaceWeek continues, but already after #NewSpaceEurope my notebook is full of interesting thoughts to expand on: - "We go to space because it's hard" (can't tag John F. Kennedy so tagging Raphael Roettgen, CFA) - "Microgravity is a resource. It is a little spice in a recipe for the world's best optical fibre" (Hubert Moser) - challenges for us in Europe according to H. Ludwig Moeller: "China, Trump, Musk, Moon" - and also on the topic of EU and investment: "Europe is a nice nursery" (Guillaume de La Brosse), but then space start-ups and scale-ups are often forced to look for funding in the US And last but not least, in order to expand space-for-Earth business "we need to speak the same language" (Andrea Krupa). Reminds me very much of interdisciplanary research projects and scicomm work in general. Our Chief Executive Officer, Eva Berneke, has been speaking at the 17th European Space Conference in Brussels today, discussing the importance of the IRIS² programme 🛰️ Alongside panel colleagues from the European Commission, the European Space Agency - ESA, Hispasat and SES Satellites, Eva discussed how IRIS² is set to go beyond advancing European satellite sovereignty; the programme will address the growing challenges of space privatisation by exemplifying how public-private collaboration can empower Europe’s space industry. Our SpaceRISE consortium panellists also discussed the innovation and technology behind IRIS², demonstrating how the cross-industry collaboration at the heart of the programme will provide synergies across wider European infrastructure, including for our own Eutelsat OneWeb LEO constellation. Speaking at the event, Eva said: “It represents a call to action for the entire sector. It is important for our sovereignty that we transform IRIS² into reality, in order to shape the future of connectivity and boost competitiveness. “Innovation and flexibility will be of essence to reach our ambitious goals for this project. Our aim within the consortium is to take the lead as private actors, showing that we are not simply counting on public investment, but working closely together for the future of the European space industry.”

HAVING THE CAKE AND EATING IT The idea of consolidating the European space industry by merging the major players while maintaining the geographical return policy, is a contradiction in terms. Consolidation of the European space industry is essential for more efficient operations and to potentially lower costs, but it necessarily includes a revision of suppliers policies along criteria of efficiency, quality, and costs, thus potentially undermining the geographical return policy that is the foundation of the ESA's procurement model. The solution? ESA should just concentrate on so-called mandatory programs (technology, space science programs) and also, perhaps, on international space exploration cooperation. In this way it could continue to fulfill its basic mission without interfering with market dynamics.

The European space sector is embracing private companies to spearhead a new generation of launchers and commercial launch services. Through the ESA’s Boost! program, €44.22 million in co-financing will support four companies: Germany’s HyImpulse, Isar Aerospace, and Rocket Factory Augsburg, along with the UK-based Orbex. This initiative aims to fast-track the transition from technological development to operational services, diversifying Europe’s capabilities in accessing space. The funding will enable these companies to advance testing, enhance production facilities, and prepare for their first flights, laying the groundwork for Europe’s future leadership in space missions. As the space economy grows globally, ESA’s support ensures Europe remains competitive and strengthens its position in strategic and commercial missions. 📡 Follow the Space Economy Institute for updates on how public-private collaboration is shaping the future of space access. #SpaceEconomyMaster #SpaceEconomy #NewSpace #NewSpaceEconomy #SpaceEconomyInstitute #Space
