🚀 On April 3 and 4, we kicked off our Planetary Defence Challenge, inspiring the next generation of space enthusiasts. Renowned astronomer and astrophysicist Gianluca Masi visited three high schools across Luxembourg - Vauban, Ecole et Lycée Français de Luxembourg Lycée de Garçons de Luxembourg, and Lycée Edward Steichen Clervaux - LESC - to share his expertise on planetary defence, asteroids, and methods of deflecting them. Innovative interactive tools brought the sessions to life, sparking outstanding feedback from students. Many were astonished by the sheer number of asteroids and shared that the experience significantly expanded their knowledge about these celestial bodies. Armed with expert insights, they're ready to tackle asteroid deflection scenarios and explore solutions to safeguard our planet as part of our new educational challenge. And this is just the beginning - other exciting sessions are on the way! We want to thank Gianluca Masi, the hosting schools and our sponsors Luxembourg Space Agency, Luxembourg National Research Fund (FNR) and SnT, Interdisciplinary Centre for Security, Reliability and Trust for making this initiative possible. Together, we’re inspiring the future of planetary science! #PlanetaryDefenceChallenge #PlanetaryDefence #Asteroids #Education #scienceforkids #inspiration

Astronomers are constantly monitoring the skies for near-Earth objects that could pose a threat to our planet. Professor Alan Fitzsimmons is among the scientists leading the charge to understand asteroid risks. One such asteroid, 2024 YR4, once had a 3.1% chance of hitting Earth but now poses almost no risk. These efforts not only help with planetary defence, but also offer insights into the origins of our Solar System. https://lnkd.in/dWbY-299
Spinning Through Space: The Astronomers Watching the Skies for Asteroids Every day, astronomers scan the skies for near-Earth objects that could pose a threat to our planet. Their work is crucial for planetary defence, ensuring we have the knowledge and technology to detect and mitigate potential asteroid impacts. Professor Alan Fitzsimmons is among the scientists leading these efforts, studying the composition and behaviour of asteroids to improve our understanding of potential impact risks, including asteroid 2024 YR4, which briefly had a 3.1% chance of hitting Earth! Thankfully, that risk has dropped to just 0.001%. Asteroids tell us more than just the story of potential impact, they hold clues about the birth of our Solar System and even our planet’s composition. From NASA’s DART mission to ESA’s planetary defence programmes, experts are working hard to detect, track, and understand these celestial visitors. An important milestone for Hera 🛰️☄️. Great to see Asteroid Day co-founder Sir Brian May together with Dr. Patrick Michel and Hera’s science team. 🔭 Go, #Hera!
🛰️ #Hera completes its Mars flyby! Full steam towards Didymos! On 12 March, the Hera spacecraft flew by the red planet as part its cruise phase through deep space, carefully designed by ESA’s Flight Dynamics team. By coming as close as 5000 km away from Mars, the planet’s gravity shifted the spacecraft’s trajectory towards its final destination, the Didymos binary asteroid. This manoeuvre shortened its journey time by many months and saved a substantial amount of fuel. “Our Mission Analysis and Flight Dynamics team at #ESOC in Germany did a great job of planning the gravity assist,” says Caglayan Guerbuez, ESA’s Hera Spacecraft Operations Manager. “Especially as they were asked to fine-tune the manoeuvre to take Hera close to Deimos – which created quite some extra work for them!” Launched on 7 October 2024, Hera is on its way to visit the first asteroid to have had its orbit altered by human action. By gathering close-up data about the Dimorphos asteroid, which was impacted by NASA’s DART spacecraft in 2022, Hera will help turn asteroid deflection into a well understood and potentially repeatable technique. 📸 (2) Hera’s Hyperscout H hyperspectral imager: it observes in a range of colours beyond the limits of the human eye, in 25 visible and near-infrared spectral bands to characterise surface materials. 📸 (3) Hera’s science team, including Sir Brian May, celebrate as the first images come in.
