ITS America’s Automated Vehicle Freight Working Group has released AV Freight recommendations to the National Highway Traffic Administration (NHTSA). Commercial freight is set to emerge in late 2024 and 2025, and additional use cases like driverless shuttles and intercity trucking are also on the horizon. While much of the guidance is still relevant, there remain a few aspects such as remote assistance, emerging industry best practices, and response to public safety officials that could benefit from specific inclusion or updates in the ADS guidance. Based on technical input from a wide variety of stakeholders, including an ITS America member survey on the topic, the ITS America Automated Vehicle Freight Working Group makes the following recommendations regarding NHTSA’s AV Guidance.

The National Electric Vehicle Infrastructure (NEVI) Program deadline has been extended! Applications are now due to DOT.NEVIApplication@illinois.gov by 11:59PM (CT) on January 31st, 2025. Illinois Department of Transportation previously issued a NOFO to allocate up to $24 million in grants for the design, construction or upgrade, operation, and maintenance of EV charging stations within a one-mile driving distance of eligible locations (see map). The program will cover up to 80% of eligible costs for upgrading existing EV charging sites or establishing new sites along Alternative Fuel Corridors (AFCs). Did you ever consider the impact of automated driving on energy consumption? A recent study conducted by Argonne in partnership with GM analyzed over 1 million kilometers of real-world data. The study indicates that current adaptive cruise control is approximately 2% less energy-efficient compared to human drivers involved in the study. Surprisingly, adaptive cruise control demonstrates the lowest efficiency in cruising maneuvers, where it is predominantly utilized today, characterized by minimal acceleration and braking. Nonetheless, ACC showcases superior efficiency to human drivers in dynamic maneuvers involving acceleration and braking, offering inherent opportunities for energy conservation as advanced automated driving technologies become more prevalent in suburban and urban road settings.
