The greatest challenge was constantly shifting the scale of design thinking—from the macro scale of viaduct bridges to the human scale of door handles.

As we’ve highlighted in previous discussions, China has been witnessing a remarkable rise in cultural and multifunctional centers designed to cater to both business and leisure. These spaces stand out for their holistic approach, integrating architecture, design, and services to create immersive and engaging experiences. The Ya’an Panda Performance Center, designed by ZXD Architects, exemplifies this trend. Located near the Bifengxia Base of the China Giant Panda Protection and Research Center, the center redefines the relationship between architecture and nature with its panda-inspired form. The dual-volume design, symbolizing a mother panda and her cub, houses a 1,200-seat performance hall alongside dormitories, rehearsal spaces, and other facilities, all connected by green roofs planted with native vegetation. Visitors can access the roof via staircases, offering panoramic views of the forested mountains and a tranquil connection with nature. The façade, crafted from perforated aluminum panels, mimics panda fur with a feather-like texture, creating dynamic effects with internal LED lighting at night.
