Competition sketch for a new office building next to the Pearl Tower _ Shanghai, PRC A simple shape with a twist. On upper levels, the building shows reverence to its surroundings by stepping back and softening the shape to allow better views of the iconic Pearl tower. The twist also adds interest to what is - by brief requirement - a very simple and economical square plan. The front facade becomes a canopy reaching out to the riverfront and opening the building up to the beautiful Pearl park on ground levels. A vertical gap runs along the corner of the building highlighting the dynamic movement of the form and visually linking the park, lower levels and crown of the tower. On an urban level, the Pearl park is preserved where possible but opened up with the addition of a public promenade around the Pearl and of a pedestrian footbridge connecting the metro exit, the existing elevated pedestrian crossing above the busy intersection, the elevated Pearl Tower visitor entrance, Pearl Park, the new tower and finally the newly redeveloped waterfront promenade. In Ho Chi Minh City, Vietnam, a unique townhouse tucked into the urban fabric, uses the natural environment to inspire its built spaces. In this bustling city of 8.9 million people, constant changing of the layout and structures within the city, left it with a lot of irregular sized lots throughout the city. This irregularity, left designers with a challenging lot of land to design on, but embracing its unique shape allowed for the creation of a truly unique property. The mixed use property built on the site, wanted to incorporate simplicity and sensibility within its design. The result, was a property with expansive windows for natural light, alongside a layout allowing for the natural air flow throughout the building. The design also allowed the natural sunlight to flow throughout the project, lowering its energy usage. Each floor of the building has its own unique terrace with a garden, allowing for a bit of the natural environment within the dense ally. Adaptable interior spaces, allow for the potential to change the interior uses over time, thus making it more resilient in the long term. It doesn’t matter the size, shape, or location of any site. Sustainability can be incorporated within our cities to create stronger, more resilient, longer lasting urban fabric. 🚧 The Omniturm: Redefining Frankfurt's Skyline (2016–2019) 🌆 From 2016 to 2019, Frankfurt witnessed the rise of one of its most iconic architectural marvels—the Omniturm. Designed by renowned architect Bjarke Ingels Group (BIG), this mixed-use skyscraper redefined the city's skyline, blending innovation, sustainability, and functionality into a single vertical masterpiece. Standing at 190 meters, the Omniturm’s unique feature is its striking "twist" in the façade—a design element that creates a dynamic transition between office, residential, and public spaces. This architectural innovation isn't just about aesthetics; it reflects a bold commitment to human-centric design in urban spaces. Eco-retreat in China links cabins via a maze that challenges perception Advanced Architecture Lab and Wiki World have joined forces to create a wilderness retreat that challenges the conventions of both architecture and human interaction with space. Known as Cabin of Maze, the project embraces the concept of “blurred” spatial relationships to create a unique living experience. Located in the Wuhan Ganlushan Culture Creativity City, a cultural and tourism destination in the north gate of Yangtze New Town, China, the retreat offers a unique and immersive experience that combines solitude with community living. The core idea behind Cabin of Maze is to offer a living experience that goes beyond traditional floor plans. In doing so, the architectural duo came up with a design idea that flips the typical residential layout on its head, by offering 13 interconnected rooms (bedrooms, living rooms, and bathrooms) scattered across a slender island. These rooms are linked via a 100-meter-long (328-ft), 80-centimeter-wide (31.5-in) black corridor, which itself becomes an essential part of the experience. seed plaza, situated in nanhu district, jiaxing, just 10 kilometers east of the downtown area, stands as a unique architectural marvel at the intersection of urban and natural environments. surrounded by farms, parks, residential, and commercial streets, the plaza embraces diverse landscapes, creating a vibrant sense of place. this real estate supporting facility has evolved into an exhibition center and retail space for nearby communities, with plans to transform into a community center for the neighborhood, embodying the concept of "half indoors, half outdoors." at seed plaze, the design story began by highlighting the shift in societal values post-pandemic, with an increased desire for interaction with nature. recognizing this shift, the architects aimed to integrate a regulator that seamlessly connects the urban and natural landscape within the plaza, emphasizing a harmonious coexistence. the bold inclusion of 3500㎡ of outdoor space within the 7000㎡ of architectural space challenges conventional real estate revenue logic, creating an open architectural form that aligns with the client's vision of "half city, half nature." https://bit.ly/3U6NC26
