📢 🇯🇲 Jamaican Companies: check out these important updates for registering as a data controller at the OIC! 🔹 Data Controllers registration actually starts on June 1, 2024, as that is when the Registration Form officially becomes available. 🔹 Create an OIC user account for the data controller (by email) before June 1, 2024. 🔹 The OIC will send a notification by email when the form is available on their website. 🔹 Registration fees can be found in the Regulations but (spoiler alert) the initial registration fee ranges from J$7,500 to J$25,000. DID YOU KNOW? The Nigeria Data Protection Commission (NDPC) has extended the registration deadline for Data Controllers and Data Processors of Major Importance (DCPMIs) to 31st October 2024. This extension grants DCPMIs additional time to fulfil their registration obligations and mitigate the risk of non-compliance penalties under the Nigeria Data Protection Act (NDPA) 2023.   It should be noted that on 14th February 2024, the NDPC issued a Guidance Notice mandating DCPMIs to register by 30th June 2024. This deadline was later extended to 30th September 2024. The latest extension now provides DCPMIs a final opportunity to register without incurring penalties until the new deadline. Non-compliance beyond 31st October 2024 will constitute a violation of the NDPA, subjecting defaulting DCPMIs to enforcement actions.
