🍽️ A recipe for success: announcing our exit from Lupa Foods, which drove a 5.2x return for our UK funds... 🍽️ We're delighted to share the news that we've sold our stake in Lupa Foods, a leading supplier to the UK food industry. The business has been acquired by Geia Food, the leading food concept provider in the Nordics. Our UK funds first backed Lupa Foods - then known as Donatantonio - in 2007. Over the lifetime of our investment, we drove a 5.2x return and here's how... 🏆 A transformational merger: We backed a 2018 merger with Compleat Food Network - with funding from our debt funds in the UK - to create Lupa Foods and position it as a leader in ingredient sourcing. 📈 Scaling success: Since 2018, we have worked closely with Manish Mandavia and the Lupa leadership team to double turnover to £45m annually, building a reputation for operational excellence and profitability. 🌱 Sustainability leadership: Supported by Beringea's leadership of ESG_VC, we've worked alongside Claire Lindsay to enhance Lupa's environmental practices, which have included third-party-audited carbon emissions certification. Ferrero has just acquired Power Crunch, the US-based protein-snack maker known for its wafer bars and high-protein crisps. This move is part of Ferrero's strategic expansion into the better-for-you snacks segment. I'm particularly excited about this deal because it highlights the increasing importance of healthier snack options within the food and beverage industry. The acquisition will see Ferrero take on 50 employees and operations at Power Crunch's office in Irvine, California. This isn't Ferrero's first foray into the healthy snacks market. In 2022, they bought Fulfil Nutrition, an Ireland-based protein-bar maker, and Wells Enterprises, which includes Halo Top, a low-calorie ice cream brand. It's clear that Ferrero is committed to diversifying its portfolio and catering to the growing demand for nutritious snack options. Yesterday, we took to the Nestlé AGM to challenge the world's largest food manufacturer. Coordinated by ShareAction, a group of Nestlé shareholders had put forward a resolution aimed to move the company away from over-reliance on products high in fat, sugar and salt, and towards healthier eating options. The resolution was to be voted on by all shareholders at the AGM yesterday. The full results of which were 11% shareholders for, 88% against and 1% abstained. Whilst this may be less than we wanted, the direction of travel is clear. 🚀 Investors - and consumers - are recognising the importance of addressing the business risks and public health impacts of an industry that is heavily reliant on the sales of unhealthy food. They have growing expectations from all food manufacturers, including Nestlé.
