Have you ever wondered why low-impact foundations are becoming a buzzword in sustainable construction? Navigating the UK's regulatory landscape for these eco-friendly foundations can be daunting, but it's crucial for minimizing environmental disruption and achieving compliance. I recently tackled a project where we integrated low-impact foundations, and I learned a few key tips that might help you streamline the process. First, understanding the UK Building Regulations is essential. Compliance starts with selecting the right foundation type, such as screw piles or raft foundations, which reduce soil disturbance. Engaging early with local planning authorities is vital – they can offer insights into specific requirements for environmental assessments, especially if you're near protected land. I also found that partnering with experienced engineers who specialize in sustainable practices is invaluable. They can guide you on using innovative materials like recycled aggregates, which not only meet regulatory standards but also enhance the project’s sustainability credentials. Lastly, keeping an open line of communication with stakeholders ensures that everyone is on board with the eco-friendly objectives, helping to avoid costly delays. Have you managed a similar project? What strategies did you find effective in ensuring compliance? https://lnkd.in/dWt_5DJv

🌱 Sustainability in Construction: 'Waste Not, Build More'. Ever thought about what happens to all the waste we generate during construction? Spoiler alert: it’s a LOT enough to make sustainability in our industry a non-negotiable priority. As a student graduating this year in the field of Project Management (Construction) and someone who has had hands-on experience coordinating projects, I’ve realized that sustainability is much more than a trend, it’s our responsibility. During my time as a Project Assistant, I saw how a little extra planning could make a massive difference. Think material optimization, on-site sorting, and reusing demolition waste. Simple, right? Yet the impact, both on the environment and the bottom line is remarkable. Diving into LEED (Leadership in Energy and Environmental Design) during my studies has been eye-opening. It’s not just about checking boxes; it’s about rethinking how we design, build, and operate. From cutting down waste to conserving water and improving indoor air quality, LEED shows us how to build smarter, greener, and better. So, how can we make construction more sustainable? Plan with purpose: Start waste management strategies right from the drawing board. Empower your team: Train your crew; it’s not just about sorting materials, it’s about mindset shifts. Celebrate small wins: You don’t have to go all in on LEED at once. Even small steps make a big difference. Sustainable construction is the future. Let’s leave behind not just solid structures but also a planet we can all be proud of. What’s your take? How is your team rethinking sustainability in construction? Share your wins, your challenges, or even your wildest ideas. Let’s inspire each other to build better. #Sustainability #Construction #LEED #wastemanagement #ProjectManagement #Canada #NorthAmerica

Someone told me I am a construction sustainability expert. But I never see myself like one. This person read my LinkedIn content for over a year. Not only reading the posts, but also looking at the references, links and readings I shared. “You write about so many building and sustainability things and so deeply! You’re such an expert.” I never see myself like one. It’s not about impostor syndrome. But because I work in a field evolving every week. I decarbonise and provide value to buildings thanks to evidence and science. There are new scientific publications every week. There are new buildings delivered every month. There are new regulations every year. I don’t see myself as an expert, but as an explorer. I explore this newness everyday. While working, reading or walking in the street. And then I share it with people online. Yes, I’m an expert of my craft because it’s unique. But first and foremost, I explore the world of sustainability in construction. & the forefront of it is super exciting! What are you interested in? _ ps - Enjoyed this post? The real message of my piece in New Civil Engineer is that anyone pushing innovation in construction should work hard to analyse the commercial drivers, blockers and benefits of that innovation, not just in your own company but above and below you in the value chain. Start with the commercial picture then let your scaling strategy follow. #innovation #skanska #construction #skanskauk #sustainability
“The construction industry is a high carbon emitting, low productivity industry and we need to be the opposite of those two things. We need a lot of innovation, collaboration and different ways of working to get there,” says Skanska UK director of sustainability and innovation Adam Crossley

What does it take for construction companies to achieve a 6 Star Green Star rating? In the past 12 months, construction company Laing O’Rourke has achieved multiple 6 Star Green Star ratings. What has made these projects so special? According to the Green Building Council of Australia (GBCA), a 6 Star Green Star rating showcases world leadership in sustainable building practices. Ratings look at the sustainability and liveability of the entire project’s design, construction and operation, covering everything from energy efficiency to water use to material selection. In Australia, Laing O’Rourke has achieved no fewer than six 6 Star benchmarks of the Green Star scheme over the past 12 months, on projects including: Central Station Metro, one of the first underground stations Green Star-certified in Australia Ellenbrook Station, part of the Morley-Ellenbrook Line project in Western Australia Ballajura Station, part of the Morley-Ellenbrook Line in Western Australia Union Station, part of the Level Crossing Removal Project as part of Victoria’s Big Build. This certification is the highest sustainability rating ever awarded to a rail project in Victoria. So how was this achieved? And what can other construction companies learn from the sustainable engineering practices required to earn such an accolade? Read more.........
