HIP V. HYPE is proud to be appointed as the sustainability consultant for Elgin Towers, Carlton: the Homes Victoria red brick towers redevelopment at 20 Elgin Street and 141 Nicholson Street. Working closely with lead consultants Architectus, HIP V. HYPE aims to advance the sustainability and affordability of 231 brand new energy efficient homes for the comfort of future renters. Funded through the Australian Government's Social Housing Accelerator Program and the first to be delivered as part of the Victorian state government's commitment to retire and redevelop Melbourne's older social housing high-rise buildings, this redevelopment will provide a minimum 16% increase in modern and comfortable social housing from the circa 1960 originals. With the inherent structural design severely limiting retrofit options to meet contemporary standards, rebuilding allows for new buildings to be designed according to Green Star sustainability standards and 7-star NatHERS rating, along with improved building safety, affordability and comfort for residents in the long term. Redeveloping the towers will not only boost social housing supply for those in need in a well-designed and connected neighbourhood, but it also provides the modern standards and comfort renters deserve.
