I was talking to a leader who hires for shipping, receiving, and assembly. They no longer care about experience, because they have their own process, and found previous experience does not ensure success. A persons ability to follow direction, process information, and desire to learn are the key factors. While the candidate is waiting for the interview to start, they are handed a small box of Legos and challenged to see if they can put it together before the interviewer arrives. Through a camera in the interview room, they watch. Some people do not play at all, other's start putting the Legos together free form immediately, trying to get done before the interviewer arrives, and then there are those who look at the picture, read the directions, and start the assembly process. By using creativity in their hiring process and spending $5 on a small child's toy, they have had 100% success in hiring the right person, even if said person has no previous experience in the industry. Makes me wonder what small things each of us can do to increase our success.
