My Job Depends On Ag

25 years ago, I remember my father-in-law and I were discussing how our neigbor was planting melons seeds every 9 inches. We both thought, man, he's got some courage to plant melons so far apart. We were planting them at 6 to 7 seven inches. Then we would have to come back later and have a choppin crew come thin our plant population down. But he saved his money by taking that risk and planted his to the population we all wanted. If one melon seed or two doesn't germinate or suffers some sort of pest damage you can have large skips in your field. Nowadays we are planting them every 15 to 16 inches. The seed is just ridiculously expensive. It's about 600 dollars an acre even with one seed every 15 inches lol. We have to find ways to remain competitive. The insane costs of doing business, and regulations that our competitors are not required to do, enjoy the opportunity to sell fruit and vegetables right next to ours. The challenge to put fruit and vegetables on the stores shelves against growers from other states and countries is extremely challenging. One plant every 16 inches scares me to death lol. It's nerve racking to plant melons as there are so few seeds and if you have the slightest issues you'll end up with huge skips in your field. But somehow we find a way, for now anyway.

I don't know anything about melons but I assume that seed is the only, or at least most cost effective way, to plant them? I know a lot of people choose transplants for tomatoes because they are more consistent and have a higher success rate but they are also more expensive. Is that an option with melons?

If a field can be robotically weeded at 3mph why can't a machine be developed to plant seeds on these skips?

Thanks for sharing! God bless our Farmers 💕

Playing field is not level. I can’t send my wine overseas without any tariffs yet their stuff comes here and gets labeled American

The seed is the most important thing you buy. Depending on the crop, it is the least expensive thing you buy. It is generally speaking, the first thing that gets complained about. And with crop terms, it might be the last thing you pay for. If you are working with a reputable Seedsman and one with personal not corporate morals…you would already know this!!!

Seed companies have us in a tight spot!

It is still a miracle to me every time they actually come up…even if there is a skip or two.
