🚨🚨JHTE Spotlight Post 🚨🚨 The JHTE Team is honored and proud to share the work of the late Dr. Linda Joyce Forristal, whose article, "Students as Co-Creators of Interdisciplinary Tourism Content," received Highly Commended recognition in the 2023 ICHRIE Journal of Hospitality & Tourism Education (JHTE) The eCopy of this article is now available: https://lnkd.in/gvFRD6V2 Key Features: - Bridging the gap: Traditional hospitality and tourism programs lack field exposure. Co-creating content across disciplines enhances learning. 🌍 - Beyond textbooks: Students delve into lesser-covered disciplines like music 🎵 and astronomy 🔭, exploring their connections to tourism and creating original presentations. 📊 - Empowering learners: As co-creators, students develop valuable skills like self-directed learning, research 📚, critical thinking 💡, and global competency. 🌟 - Adaptable approach: The method can be easily implemented in diverse classrooms, encouraging students to discover niche tourism experiences worldwide. 🌎 This research paves the way for innovative and engaging learning experiences that equip future hospitality professionals with the knowledge and skills to thrive in an ever-evolving industry. What are your thoughts on interdisciplinary learning in hospitality and tourism education? Share your insights in the comments! #ICHRIE #JHTE #HighlyCommended #HospitalityEducation #TourismEducation #InterdisciplinaryLearning #StudentEmpowerment #ResearchMatters #CreativeThinking #GlobalCompetency

#Annoucement A critical area that often gets overlooked in tourism and hospitality education is the art of writing impactful 'Case Studies' for classroom engagement. 🖊️ While our expertise lies in crafting research papers, articles, and book chapters, as educators, our primary tool should be a captivating case study. One that instantly captivates students and sets the stage for dynamic learning experiences. 🎓 Unfortunately, in our pursuit of more citations and a strong academic reputation, we have stopped experimenting with our teaching methods and have become overly reliant on PowerPoint presentations. As a passionate teacher, I have always aimed to incorporate project-based learning (PBL) or experiential learning methods into my classroom teaching. These methods not only spark discussions but also inspire and motivate students. I was constantly on the lookout for exciting real-life cases, particularly in the tourism industry, to spark discussions with my students. Unfortunately, I was unable to find any suitable cases, which motivated me to write my own. I firmly believe that writing teaching cases remains an underutilized practice, especially within our (tourism and hospitality) field. Beyond serving as a teaching tool, crafting case studies holds immense potential and benefits, which I've previously discussed on my LinkedIn page. I applaud Dr. Sweety Jamgade for taking the initiative and organizing an FDP on writing teaching cases for her University from July 16th to July 19th, 2024. 🚀 I will be leading a three-day session on the topic. Take a look at the brochure for further information. We are excited to welcome enthusiastic scholars who are interested in developing teaching cases centered around tourism and hospitality. Feel free to reach out to us with any questions or if you need accommodations. #teachingcases #casemethods #tourism&hospitality #FDPs #tourismscholars #hospitalityscholars #ramaiahuniversity

The newspaper El Norte de Castilla has featured the Teaching Innovation Project that I am currently developing in collaboration with Professor Natalia Martin Cruz in this academic year. This initiative introduces a competitive role-playing methodology in which students engage with a real client, the Federico Wattenberg Vaccean Studies Center (CEVFW), to design both an interactive tourist guide for the Vaccean archaeological site and an educational game aimed at disseminating knowledge about the ancient Vaccean city of Pintia. Structured in multidisciplinary teams of 11 students, participants are responsible for various roles, including technical development, project management, team coordination, budget planning, and stakeholder engagement. Through this comprehensive approach, students are exposed to real-world professional challenges, thereby enhancing their experiential learning and fostering the development of key competencies. The project benefits from the collaboration of external experts, such as Saray Maestro and Víctor Ortega, as well as the continuous involvement of the CEVFW, represented by Carlos Sanz Mínguez and Pablo Luis de Castro, whose expertise enriches the academic outcomes of the project. Prior to the final presentation, the student teams conducted usability tests in various primary and secondary schools, including Huelgas Reales, Virgen Niña, IE Parquesol, IE Pinar de la Rubia, and IE Recesvinto. These tests provided valuable user feedback, which was subsequently incorporated to improve their applications. This project exemplifies how university education can be aligned with professional practice through the implementation of practical, collaborative challenges that enhance both academic training and employability, contributing to the ongoing transformation of educational experiences. #TeachingInnovation #ExperientialLearning #Teamwork #RolePlayingMethodology #InteractiveEducation #UsabilityTesting #ProfessionalSkills #EducationalTransformation #UniversityIndustryCollaboration #VacceanHeritage

We’re excited to share a powerful piece written by our very own Barb Mock, titled "Why Travel is Essential for Students." 🌍 In this article, Barb explores how travel can transform the way students view the world and themselves. ✨ "As educators, we have the power to shape more than just academic skills; we can foster open-mindedness and empathy. Student travel is a powerful tool for achieving this. By immersing students in new cultures, traditions, and ways of life, we can instill an understanding that goes beyond what textbooks can teach." – Barb Mock 📖 Read the full article and discover how travel can play a key role in shaping the next generation! #StudentTravel #EducationalTrips #TravelWithPurpose #TWB #LearningThroughTravel https://lnkd.in/eRpnvmk9

I wanted to say a big thank you to all of you who have asked me "How's the thesis going?' and "Have you finished that degree yet?". Last night university results were issued and I received a grade far in excess of what I think I deserve for my thesis which was the culmination of two years of work (but I will take it!). I now have a Master of Tourism, Environment and Cultural Heritage. My thesis (People and Place: How a university campus relocation is subverting a city’s identity) was a joy. Feel free to ask me all about it. Preferably while settled in with a glass of something because I do tend to ramble on :) It was an excellent course with very, very good lecturers and lectures/experiential learning opportunities. There was nothing I disliked learning BTW. All of it valuable in its own way. The Master's program is no more however there are two other post-grad options available: https://lnkd.in/gMCGNARS #CulturalHeritage #TourismAndEnvironment #UrbanStudies #PlaceAndIdentity #UTASGrad #HigherEducation #ExperientialLearning #LifelongLearning

👉 Are you interested in alternatives to mainstream narratives of sustainability and wish to engage in transformative discussions about radical spatial sustainability? 👉 Are you a teacher, youth worker, urban planner, architect, youth activist, and/or policy-maker, committed to participatory democracy and sustainable spatial transformations? 👉 Are you living in Greece? ✊ Join us for a 5-day training course in Galatina, Lecce, Italy, and be part of a larger process to rethink and reshape the future of our spatial environments, the rural and the urban, even challenging the division between these two. 🙃 Why Radical Sustainability? In recent years, sustainability has become a widely used term—often reduced to an empty word. Instead of fostering meaningful change, mainstream interpretations of sustainability have reinforced socio-ecological problems. Approaches of mainstream sustainability and green growth often shift the costs of ecological impacts to marginalised communities and exacerbate inequalities in the name of economic growth. 🐌 This training course seeks to adopt a radical and critical approach to sustainability through degrowth spatial politics. It will involve non-formal learning methodologies, including teamwork, peer learning, and experiential learning. Participants will reflect on local sustainability challenges, co-create solutions, and contribute actively to the course’s content. Learn more and apply: https://lnkd.in/dp77HYAB
