"About 850 of some 5,000 facilities would be impacted by the preferred rule changes, the agency said. Those include large facilities processing more than 50 million pounds of meat per year and more than 100 million pounds of poultry per year." "The EPA estimates that under its preferred option, at least 16 facilities will be forced to close, impacting at least 17,000 jobs. At the top end, the EPA estimates up to 53 plants could close." "Prices for beef, chicken, turkey, and pork products are expected to increase slightly while availability of meat and poultry is expected to decrease slightly, according to the agency." https://lnkd.in/exQW_8Cu

❌ #Florida and #Alabama have become the first states to ban #cultivatedmeat ❌ Last week (1 May), Florida’s Governer #RonDeSantis signed a law (SB 1084) prohibiting the sale and production of cell-based meat within the state, making Florida the first US state to enact such a ban. ❌ On Tuesday this week (7 May), Alabama followed suit, after Governer #KayIvey signed a bill (SB 23) banning the production and sale of cultivated meat within the state. 🗣 Commenting on the ban in Florida, GOOD Meat said: "The legislature presented no credible safety concerns, and its regulatory bodies asked us for no clarifying information. This stands in contrast to the 3+ years we engaged with the USDA and FDA to ensure our product is safe for consumers." 🗣 "This legislation has always been about one thing – helping one industry, 'Big Ag', avoid accountability and competition. Today, these multinational corporations and their lobbyists won." ✅ UPSIDE Foods has launched a petition urging lawmakers to reconsider, stating: “Let’s be clear: These laws do not protect consumers. It is ‘food policing’ to protect entrenched interests, defying free market principles and limiting consumer autonomy for a product the food safety experts at USDA and FDA have deemed safe.” #cellbasedmeat #culturedmeat #novelfood #altprotein #US 🧫 Read more on The Cell Base 👇

❌ UPSIDE Foods is suing Florida over a ban on cultivated meat, calling the legislation unconstitutional The California-based cultivated meat leader has filed a lawsuit against Florida, challenging the state's recent ban on producing and selling cultivated meat. Upside Foods argues that the ban, passed under Florida Senate Bill 1084, is unconstitutional and seeks a federal court injunction to overturn it. The ban, announced on May 1 by Governor Ron DeSantis, classifies the production and sale of cultivated meat as a second-degree misdemeanour. Penalties include fines up to $5,000, up to 60 days in jail, and the revocation of business licenses. Upside Foods, supported by the Institute for Justice, claims the ban violates the Commerce Clause and the Supremacy Clause of the U.S. Constitution. They argue that the law was driven by economic protectionism favouring traditional cattle interests and lacking a legitimate public health basis. Upside Foods' claims the ban results in lost revenue, missed opportunities, and reputational damage, particularly in a significant market like Florida, the third-largest economy in the US. Interesting shifts in UK poultry production lately 📉 Poultry meat production in the UK dropped almost 40,000 tonnes in November 2024 compared to the previous month, totalling 160,000 tonnes. Despite these numbers, the year as a whole is trending up with an overall increase of 46,000 tonnes for the first 11 months of 2024. Broiler meat production fell sharply by 43,500 tonnes. The number of broilers slaughtered was also down, totalling 87.5 million birds, a 2.7% drop from last year. Boiling fowl production didn't fare much better, declining slightly to 4,400 tonnes. On the flip side, there's a glimmer of positivity with broiler chick placings in November up by 6.5% at 85 million chicks. This indicates potential expansion in future production capacity. 🐔 With the holidays approaching, turkey slaughter numbers rose, yet remained 200,000 birds short of last year's total at 1.6 million. The numbers tell fascinating stories about our food supply chain and industry trends. For those of you working in FMCG or food manufacturing, it's useful to keep an eye on these developments. They could impact planning and strategy for 2025. Share your thoughts below or get in touch if you need insights on securing mid-level managers for your food manufacturing operations. Rarely do I post about political issues, but the recent legislation in Florida and Alabama banning "cultured meat" feels completely wrong to me. As someone who eats meat every day (fish, beef, chicken, pork, turkey, wild game, you name it!), this doesn't affect me personally, but it’s still concerning. If the FDA has approved cultured meat for sale in the US, that should be enough. Our legislators, both at the state level and in Washington, seem to be focused on the wrong priorities. Instead of a complete ban, why not just require clear labeling for cultured meat products? A ban is an overreaction. And let's not use "safety" as an excuse. We have plenty of unsafe or unhealthy products on the market already. I'm not fooled. When the "fake meat" trend started 1-2 years ago, I pointed out that less than 10% of Americans are vegetarians. The impact on traditional meat sales is minimal because the majority of Americans will continue to buy real meat unless quality drops or prices skyrocket. Wake up, America! Are these laws really necessary? Can we not go and "fix" other problems? # meatindustry #foodmanuafcturing #CulturedMeat #FDA #FoodSafety #PoliticalPriorities
