“Understanding the ‘why’ we do what we do, versus ‘what’ and ‘how’ we do it can help us find a deeper level of connection to life.” [Barbour, Widdowson (2021)] There is a difference to sitting down on a chair (the how), from falling into a chair (the why). [Spunt et al (2010)] If you were asked ‘how’ you physically sit down, you think of the movements, If you were asked ‘why’ you sit down, you will have many deeper reasons. Our purpose ‘why’ connects to an emotional level. Behaviour and communication needs to start with ‘why’, not ‘what’. So, our work purpose, the ‘why’, could be asked: ‘Why’ do you go to work? The answer (likely) isn’t to, eg: ‘Ensure the organisation’s compliance with regulation’. It will be deeper than that. Let’s have a go at finding our purpose. This is about connecting to something deeper than the ‘what’ or ‘how’. Pick a personal object, 🎸 or a personal photograph 🎞️ that has a lot of meaning to you. Think about how you acquired the object What it means to you And how it could link to a personal purpose. For me, this is an old worn photograph i keep of my dad. He’s probably not that much older than me now, But he’s not here now, It even went across the Sahara with me. For me, this represents family and health, and taking care of people around me. I can do this through my coaching, and being there for people. What about you? What is that deeper purpose you have and connect with? Why do you do what you do? _________________ I’m Richard and I help teams and organisations improve what they do by taking an aligned systemic and detailed approach. What do I want to talk about? That's the invitation on LinkedIn when I start a post. If you'd like to talk about something, confidentially then keep reading, or scroll to the end to book your free one to one coaching by therapists session. 👇 Sometimes, what you need to talk about is hard to talk about, or not 'work', or unclear, or confidential, or seemingly unrelated to your role as a data analyst (or whatever it is you 'do'). And yet, it is all related. You are you. And The Listening Collective wants you to have somewhere to get it off your chest, process what is going on. Without judgement or a specific goal to achieve. We believe that Organisations flourish, only when people flourish. If you're a people manager and managing people through a lot of organisational change, have high attrition, too many intractable problems, or need some oopmh....then perhaps giving your team some breathing space to be heard, might be the elusive solution to your current situation. Find us at https://lnkd.in/e5sgtk5t. We provide confidential, 1:1 sessions for anyone who needs them. If you're going the The Forum's Autumn virtual conference, Matt James and I are offering a small number of 30 minute free sessions that you can book here: https://lnkd.in/e64rBiBh. Phil Anderson Dave Vernon Chris Rainsforth Penny Hicks and The Forum team are doing brilliant things to raise standards in customer operations, including thinking broadly and deeply about the industry and where it is at. I highly recommend them. #organisationsthrivewhenpeoplethrive #listening #gestalttherapy

WORKSHOP: The Interplay of Race and Anxiety in Interpersonal Relationships - Mark Williams This workshop invites us to examine the pervasive nature of micro-aggressions that are communicated in the interpersonal transactions between individuals and groups of people when racial difference is a factor. The workshop will offer a brief presentation that will form the premise for a greater discussion about the emotions and thinking that come into play when we talk about race. The basic skills that form the foundations of communication become altered in interracial interactions and the challenges and barriers we face to attend to the effects of racial injustice and racism persist with seemingly little change to the experiences of people of colour. We ask ourselves the question of how we move forward past the fear, the anger, the denial and the silence? How do we become better able to engage in race conversations in therapy, in the work place, or in general? Find out more about the full-day conference here https://buff.ly/4bgRntr * Your ticket includes access to recordings * CPD Certificate Included.

🔥 Are You Unknowingly Sabotaging Your Relationships — At Home or Work? 🔥 Most of us know about love languages, but have you heard of fight languages? The way we handle conflict can either strengthen or sabotage our relationships, including professional ones. Here’s a breakdown of five common “fight languages”: 1️⃣ The Defender - Justifies their actions instead of listening. They focus on proving they are “right,” missing the chance to understand others. 2️⃣ The Silent Stone - Shuts down and goes silent, creating emotional distance instead of finding resolution. 3️⃣ The Blamer - Points fingers and shifts responsibility, sidestepping accountability. 4️⃣ The Escalator - Ramps up intensity, raising voices or making threats, aiming to “win” rather than solve. 5️⃣ The Avoider - Downplays conflict, changing the subject to avoid tough conversations and leaving issues unresolved. Why it Matters: Recognizing your fight language can break toxic patterns, allowing for healthier communication in both personal and professional spaces. Workplaces that embrace constructive conflict resolution build more engaged, supportive teams. 👉🏾 If your corporate team could benefit from a more supportive and communicative environment, click below to schedule my signature Feedback Training Workshop. Let’s work together to build an atmosphere where constructive feedback strengthens connections, efficiently and performance. 🖱️https://lnkd.in/gqeQRmvT #conflictresolution #feedbacktraining #leadershipdevelopment #corporatetraining #psychologicalsafety #emotionalintelligence #teambuilding #workplacewellbeing #teamcommunication
