Fun facts on International Beer Day: Did you know that our Black Soldier Fly (BSF) larvae consume thousands of kilos of spent brewery grains during their life cycle at Maltento, in a sustainable process that converts food industry waste into proteins for the pet feed sector? While the beer brewing industry might view spent grain as waste, we value it as a resource that plays an integral role in our company’s business model. In fact, we are able to divert over 500 000 kgs of this waste from local landfills - monthly - simply because our little BSFs love to eat it! The BSF larvae that are farmed at our 7000m2 facility in the world-renowned City of Cape Town are able to transform this waste thanks to the power of insect biotechnology. Great to see a busy room and such lively discussion for this morning's #ORFC session on 'Ultra-processed foods: Towards an agroecological solution' – with FFCC's Mhairi Brown, RNutr, Soil Association's Rob Percival, Riverford Organic Farmers' Harriet Bell and farmer George Young. The panellists explored, amongst other things, how the dominance of ultra-processed food results from deep-rooted challenges around the consolidation of power and financialisation of the food system. Mhairi brought citizen voices to the debate, saying "citizens came to #TheFoodConversation with a good level of concern around UPFs. They feel that when they go shopping there's a lack of choice. They are led to certain products. They feel a sense of helplessness." It was also great to hear Harriet Bell championing our 2019 report 'Our Future in the Land' as a key guide to what an agroecological farming future could look like. Being asked by your clients to change your practices is inconvenient, but probably not unfamiliar for many malting barley farmers. Elizabeth Lunik, Doriana Milenkova, Vito Martielli, Camillo Piero Alborghetti and I analysed European Cooperatives that are active in various crops, and found that growing barley is often highlighted as a major source of scope 3 emissions for brewers and distillers that signed up to SBTi. Apart from becoming more sustainable, the good thing about making changes and lowering your emissions is that it can help to get a seat at the table with retailers, and make the entire value chain a winner.The challenge for cooperatives is to arrange that benefits and costs are shared sufficiently between farmers, processors and manufacturers.
