For today’s Throwback Thursday, we're taking a trip back through the photo archives to 1954. Pictured here are a group of foreign exchange students who just completed detasseling a sweet corn field. So why detassel? Seed companies and farmers use this process of removing the tassels (male flowers) from the “female” plants to control pollination and produce hybrid seeds with specific, desirable traits such as disease resistance, drought tolerance, and higher yields, which are not found in a single parent plant.

Throwback Thursday! Did You Know? – SEEDWAY’s origins date back to 1923 with the formation of Robson Seed Farms, a mail-order vegetable and flower seed business based in Hall, NY. Robson Seed Farms was noted for its Seneca Hybrid Sweet Corn Brand varieties, and over time, the company expanded its offerings to include multi-species vegetable seeds. Have a look at these seed packets/containers, literature, and bag stencil dating back to the 1930s, 50’s, 60’s and 80’s.
