As rates of youth self-harm and suicide continue to escalate, addressing gaps in self-harm aftercare is vital. A new review, led by Orygen Senior Research Fellow Dr Katrina Witt and published in the Journal of Child Psychology and Psychiatry, has outlined eight practical recommendations to guide clinicians in best practice approaches. These include ensuring all young people receive a comprehensive therapeutic assessment after each episode of self-harm and involving young people and families in the design of treatments. “Self-harm is very common in young people and is associated with suicide, so it’s critical that we intervene early and support young people with evidence-backed, effective treatments that fit their specific needs,” Dr Witt said. Last week at the Child and Adolescent Psychiatry Research Seminar in Region Sjælland, Senior researcher Mie Sedoc Jørgensen presented a poster for our large upcoming study 'Protective and risk factors for Eating Disorders: a familial high-risk study' (BLOOM). The BLOOM study aims to explore behavioral, cognitive and biological risk and protective factors in children of mothers with current or past eating disorders compared to children of mothers without psychiatric disorders. These results will help establish a basis for early detection of eating disorders and inform targeted preventive interventions. The BLOOM study will launch in May 2024.

The continuum of psychopathology, adapted from Rinsley (1980). While descriptive psychiatry is now recognizing dimensionality in diagnosis, psychoanalysts and developmental psychopathologists have long classified mental disorders along a continuum based, in part, on the nature of the early developmental failures (e.g., object constancy and evocative memory).

In this recent paper in Psychiatry and Clinical Psychopharmacology, I review the psychotherapy of schizophrenia, including psychodynamic approaches, which I contend are effective and significantly underutilized forms of treatment. https://lnkd.in/g9zT8ufz
