Can we preserve the scents of our world? #Climatechange is not only transforming landscapes but also threatening our olfactory and flavor heritage—the scents and tastes that shape cultures and traditions. The SCENTINEL Project is on a mission to capture and preserve these invisible treasures, blending science, technology, and cultural research. Climate Changes and Scent Heritage: The Urgent Need for Capturing and Preserving Olfactory Landscapes in a Changing World – SCENTINEL, co-funded by the Joint Programming Initiative on Cultural Heritage and Global Change
Did you know that climate change is threatening not just landscapes and ecosystems but also our olfactory and flavour heritage? The SCENTINEL project (Climate Changes and Scent Heritage: The Urgent Need for Capturing and Preserving Olfactory Landscapes in a Changing World) is dedicated to safeguarding the scents that define cultures, traditions, and natural environments. Thes project is co-funded by JPI Cultural Heritage and Global Change, JPI Climate, and the Belmont Forum. Through interdisciplinary research combining neuroscience, cultural studies, and advanced technology SCENTINEL is developing innovative tools to capture, digitize, and preserve endangered scents and flavours. Just as we document visual and auditory heritage, we aim to record and even reproduce scents and flavours, ensuring they remain accessible for future generations. 🔬 Duration: 36 months (June 2024 – June 2027) 🌱 Goal: Protecting the invisible yet invaluable dimension of our cultural and environmental heritage Partners: 🔹 Lead Institution: Norges teknisk-naturvitenskapelige universitet (NTNU) - Department of Chemical Engineering - NTNU 🔹 Beneficiary Partners: Institute of Information Theory and Automation of the ASCR (Czech Republic), Consiglio Nazionale delle Ricerche, CNR-INO (Italy), Venetian Cluster (Italy), 🔹 Associated Partners: UCL (UK), University of Ljubljana (Slovenia), ZRC SAZU – Research Centre of the Slovenian Academy of Sciences and Arts (Slovenia), KU Leuven (Belgium) Follow us on this pioneering journey to preserve the scents of the world! 🌎💨 📌 Learn more: https://lnkd.in/dq6YtEY2 #SCENTINEL #OlfactoryHeritage #ClimateChange #CulturalPreservation #Innovation #ScentMemory #Sustainability Idelfonso Nogueira, Bruno Rodrigues, Luana Queiroz, Filip Sroubek, Barbara Zitova, Sandris Murins, M.
