The Underlying Message
When we judge or disparage behaviors in others, it often leads to deeper self-discovery. When we see things about others that we don't like, it can teach us something about ourselves.
For example, if we think, "He is angry, and I don't like that," it may be because we are angry ourselves. If we see someone being scared, it may be because we are scared about something we wish we could do. For example, if we disapprove of smoking but don't smoke ourselves, it may be because we also do unhealthy behaviors that trouble us. Or, we may disapprove because we consider smoking inconsiderate, which may be the same inconsiderate behavior we also do.
When we look within ourselves, we often find a similar personal judgment about ourselves. By understanding our true actions, we can decide to stop and take corrective actions.
So, pay attention next time you disapprove of someone else, and see what you can learn about yourself.
