It's not too late to support our heroes: past, present, and future! The Service Women’s Action Network is more than just an organization; it is the collective voice for all military women, echoing their concerns, aspirations, and achievements. Created by the service women, for the service women, SWAN is a powerful community that staunchly advocates for their unique needs. Member-Driven: Guided by thousands, including service members and civilians, men and women alike. Inclusive: Advocating for every service woman and veteran, no matter the rank, branch, or years served. Distinct: The only organization specifically addressing the needs of both service women and women veterans. In a nation with over 40,000 nonprofits serving veterans and military personnel, our focus sets us apart. While there are numerous programs aiding our veterans, most inadvertently cater primarily to men. SWAN is here to shift that narrative. We've been instrumental in bringing pivotal changes - from ensuring all military roles are open to women and broadening reproductive healthcare services to strengthening the military justice system and supporting victims of military sexual trauma. But the journey isn't over. Join us in our mission to reshape the landscape for military women. Together, we can ensure that their voices are not just heard, but acted upon. Outstanding leadership in Virginia elevating one of the most important issues for veterans who have become entangled with the very sticky justice system. Identifying veterans (JLC 2025-01) at the earliest instance can help deflect or divert the veteran from a life of continual court hearings to treatment and accountability for their actions. The Veterans Justice Commission at the Council on Criminal Justice made this their first recommendation two years ago. Read more here to learn about the struggles with identification and the proper way to define Justice involved veterans in order to stop them from falling through the cracks. https://lnkd.in/gYpB2gaz Elizabeth McCoy Danny Murphy Lindsey Kirchhoff

Ten Things People Often Don’t Know About Military Families 🇺🇸 1. 𝗗𝗶𝘃𝗲𝗿𝘀𝗲 𝗥𝗲𝗽𝗿𝗲𝘀𝗲𝗻𝘁𝗮𝘁𝗶𝗼𝗻: Military families reflect a cross-section of the cultural, ethnic, religious beliefs, and language groups of the United States. We are a microcosm of the nation’s diversity and it enriches our communities creating a more inclusive and cohesive military environment. 2. 𝗣𝗼𝗹𝗶𝘁𝗶𝗰𝗮𝗹 𝗦𝗽𝗲𝗰𝘁𝗿𝘂𝗺: Military Servicemembers and their spouses representing a wide range of political beliefs across the political spectrum. It also ensures that our community is a true reflection of the democratic values we serve to protect. 3. 𝗡𝗮𝘁𝘂𝗿𝗮𝗹𝗶𝘇𝗲𝗱 𝗔𝗺𝗲𝗿𝗶𝗰𝗮𝗻𝘀: More than 10% of military servicemembers are naturalized Americans, bringing unique perspectives and experiences to our communities. These individuals have chosen to serve their adopted country, demonstrating immense patriotism and dedication. Ps: there are not comprehensive numbers for naturalized military spouses 4. 𝗛𝗶𝗴𝗵𝗹𝘆 𝗘𝗱𝘂𝗰𝗮𝘁𝗲𝗱 𝗦𝗽𝗼𝘂𝘀𝗲𝘀: Over 30% of military spouses hold Bachelor’s degrees or higher, contributing significantly to the workforce and community. Despite frequent relocations, we pursue careers and further education, showcasing resilience and adaptability. 5. 𝗠𝗼𝘃𝗶𝗻𝗴 𝗘𝘅𝗽𝗲𝗻𝘀𝗲𝘀: We often have to fund our change of station moves upfront and wait for the Department of Defense to reimburse us. Even then, not all of our moving expenses are covered, adding financial strain. 6. 𝗖𝗼𝗻𝘀𝘁𝗶𝘁𝘂𝘁𝗶𝗼𝗻𝗮𝗹 𝗥𝗶𝗴𝗵𝘁𝘀: Living on a military base means we cannot rely on all of our constitutional rights. For example, we must submit to searches of our vehicles and homes on military bases. 7. 𝗣𝗼𝗹𝗶𝘁𝗶𝗰𝗮𝗹 𝗡𝗲𝘂𝘁𝗿𝗮𝗹𝗶𝘁𝘆 Our service members cannot speak about political matters publicly, similar to other public servants covered by the Hatch Act. This ensures that the military remains apolitical and maintains public trust in the impartiality and professionalism of our armed forces. 8. 𝗗𝗶𝘃𝗲𝗿𝘀𝗲 𝗨𝗻𝗶𝘁𝘀: Our squadrons and units are often far more diverse than the communities surrounding the bases and posts they sit on, fostering inclusivity and understanding. This diversity strengthens our units by bringing together different perspectives and experiences. 9. 𝗖𝗵𝗮𝗹𝗹𝗲𝗻𝗴𝗲𝘀 𝗕𝗲𝘆𝗼𝗻𝗱 𝗦𝗲𝗿𝘃𝗶𝗰𝗲: “Thank you for your service” can fall flat when families among us are food insecure, underemployed, or struggling with unemployment despite high levels of education. It also feels hollow when many military families are dealing with bigotry, racism, or ignorance. 10. 𝗩𝗶𝘀𝗶𝘁𝘀 𝗛𝗼𝗺𝗲: Traveling from across the country or around the world, it’s disheartening to hear, “We’re not used to you being around” or “Be sure to come and see us.” Your effort to connect with us during these visits means a lot and helps maintain strong family bonds despite distance. #MilitaryFamilies #Diversity #SupportOurTroops

The Work Opportunity Tax Credit (WOTC) can significantly benefit military spouses by incentivizing employers to hire them. This tax credit reduces an employer's federal tax liability, encouraging companies to consider military spouses, who often face employment challenges due to frequent relocations. Ultimately, WOTC can enhance job opportunities for military spouses, supporting their career continuity and financial stability.
As Military Spouse Appreciation Day approaches, let's take a moment to recognize the resilience, talents, and sacrifices within our remarkable community. As a military spouse myself, I know firsthand the challenges we face. That's why I'm thrilled to announce that I am partnering with Kimber Hill , PMP, MSIS and VirtForce to urge legislators to include military spouses in the Work Opportunity Tax Credit. This is a powerful step towards breaking down employment barriers for a community that faces unemployment greater than 5x the national average. Join us in making our voices heard and honoring our community with purpose and action. If you've been positively impacted by a military spouse, we invite you to RSVP to our special event on May 7. We'll be on Zoom all day, ready to guide you through contacting your government officials. And the best part? The entire process takes less than five minutes. Let's advocate for real change and show our appreciation for the military spouses who make incredible sacrifices every day. RSVP now at https://lnkd.in/dars9z2Z
