Reposting from hypeart from Instagram Los Angeles’ leading art institutions are coming together to launch an emergency fund to aid artists and cultural workers who have lost their homes, studios or livelihoods in the ongoing California wildfires. At $12 million and counting, the LA Arts Community Fire Relief Fund will be administered by the Center for Cultural Innovation ( @cci_arts), a San Francisco-based intermediary that has long supported funding, advocacy and research for those in the arts. The Getty-led coalition of institutions includes LACMA, Hammer Museum and MOCA, alongside the foundations of artists, like Helen Frankenthaler, Andy Warhol, Mike Kelley, Joan Mitchell, David Hockney and more. Also on board are galleries, such as Gagosian, Hauser & Wirth, Jeffrey Deitch and Qatar Museums. Applications for the emergency grants will open on January 20 at 9 a.m. PST via the Center for Cultural Innovation's website. Credit: David Swanson / Getty Images.

They are letting this happen... "Since July 2022, the National Gallery alone has been the #victim of five separate #attacks on #iconic #paintings such as Vincent van Gogh's #Sunflowers, John Constable's The #Haywain and Velázquez’s #Rokeby #Venus. Such attacks have caused physical #damage to the #artworks, distress to #visitors and #staff alike, and disruption to our collective #mission to ensure #greatart and #artefacts are available for everyone, everywhere to enjoy. Two of these attacks have happened in the last two weeks, and that is why we have decided now is the moment for us to speak out. Our #UK #museums and #galleries are an integral part of #society, where #freeaccess allows everyone to be #inspired by humanity’s greatest #achievements." #artgallery #artislife #artist #creativity #arthistory #heritagetreasures #heritagebuilding #heritagetourism #heritageconservation #culture #culturalheritage #societyandculture #politics #war #history #historymatters #historyfacts #historylovers #historymakers #historylesson #culturalawareness #extremists #civilliberties #extinctionrebellion #environmentprotection #leftwingbias #cancelculture #cancel #woke #wokery #freedomofexpression #freedom #freespeech #censorship #violence #incompetence #environmentalprotection #climatechange #economy #taxpayers #nationalsecurity #vincentvangogh #vangogh #masterpiece #art #donations #donationswelcome #publictrust #publicopinion #trustworthiness #publicfinance https://lnkd.in/etV2rZQy

🤳🏻 June 21 is National Selfie Day across the world! Taking a selfie is undoubtedly the most common form of self-portrait but getting the perfect shot while visiting a museum can pose a danger to artworks. Earlier this year, Hiscox Insurance warned of the damages caused by visitors walking backwards into valuable artworks. As Artnet reported at the time, the phenomenon has even been dubbed “a pandemic of selfies". High-profile incidents include a selfie-taker smashing a Yayoi Kusama pumpkin at the Hirshhorn Museum and Sculpture Garden in Washington and a visitor who lost their balance at the pop-up gallery 14th Factory in Los Angeles, causing a domino effect that knocked over $200,000 worth of artworks. Taking selfies is now a strong concern for art institutions, like the British Museum, who are putting stricter protective measures in place. 👉 Read more more at: https://lnkd.in/dNfjDaac

Introducing this project on an Arrernte sacred site (Women’s Site) in the heart of Central Australia (Alice Springs) is a direct insult to the Mparntwe Traditional Custodians. While we acknowledge the perspectives of those who view tourism and commercial interests as beneficial, prioritising these over a site of profound spiritual significance, which has been sacred to the Arrernte people for thousands of years, is deeply troubling. Once again, we are witnessing the disregard of a culturally significant site in favour of external gains, undermining the preservation of an ancestral heritage that has shaped this land for millennia. This issue transcends economic interests; it is about safeguarding the heritage of the world’s oldest living culture for future generations. Is this a new movement by Indigenous interests that places commercial opportunities and gains above our cultural rights as the First Peoples of this nation? Traditional Custodian.
NTIBN holds concern over the pause of the National Blak Art Gallery project in Mpartnwe Lia Finocchiaro MLA, Northern Territory Government, Sitzler Pty Ltd, Selena Uibo

ACTIVISM (OF ALL SORTS) AND ART VANDALISM In recent years, climate activism groups or racial/ethical/political activists staged a large number of non violent but disruptive attacks to artworks or museums. ARCA collected open source data reporting 142 such events from 2020 to date, as shown in the attached slide (created by Ibrahim Bulut and Alice Bientinesi). This is becoming a permanent nightmare for museum directors and security officers, that are gradually changing the way artworks are exhibited, creating more and more barriers between the artworks and the public or even deciding to remove some works from public view. Of course, the purpose of the actions is not so much to damage the artworks (which sometimes are actually damaged, nevertheless), but to take advantage of the visibility linked to a masterpiece or a museum. A solution envisaged was to permit these groups to stage actions in front of the artworks, with the consent and under the control of the museum. However, this will attract much less media attention and is probably not going to be of much interest to activists. Even raising the punishments for acts of art vandalism- as Italy did with its new art 518 duodecies of the Criminal Code - does not seem to have much effect, as these episodes continue to increase. Thus, additional controls and more sophisticated museum security protocols seem the only solution at this point. #ARCA #artvandalism #museumsecurityprotocols
