🌱 First Week of Spring! 🌱 Pasture is at the heart of everything we do. As we enter this critical period for pasture management, finding the right balance is essential. With warmer temperatures and longer days, our pastures are coming to life. Effective spring management is key to maximizing high-quality feed for the season, boosting milk production, and ensuring successful calving. At Dairy Holdings, we conduct regular farm walks and strictly adhere to the Spring Rotation Planner to maintain optimal grazing round lengths. On the 4th of September, our Farm Systems Coach Natalia Benquet and Farm Supervisor Gary McGregor met with our Te Pirita Contract Milkers—Garry, Keegan, Seb, and Sars—for a productive day of discussions. Together, they reviewed the progress of their spring rotation plan and identified areas for improvement to ensure successful pasture utilisation in the upcoming rounds. What strategies are you implementing this spring to optimize pasture growth? Share your thoughts in the comments below! #DairyHoldings #Spring #PastureManagement #DairyFarming #SustainableAgriculture

Potato knowledge:- Did you know the period (days) from the start of the potato tuber initiating to the harvested #potato breaking #dormancy in store is consistent and therefore predictable. The belief that potato dormancy break (start of sprouting) in store is related to crop #desiccation or #harvest date is not supported by applied potato research. Cambridge University Farms research several years ago demonstrated this for a number of varieties over a number of years. Commercial potato #cropmodelling by Crop4Sight expanded the list of varieties that dormancy break could be predicted for. An essential piece of knowledge for the most efficient use of potato sprout suppression products including #Restrain #ethylene. Growers can determine this knowledge for themselves:- 1) For your variety record the date the first tubers start intiaiting. TI is defined as when the tip swells to twice the width of the #stolon ( see picture ). 2) Ensure some tubers do not receive maleic hydrazide in the field or sprout suppression when harvested. 3) Store the larger tubers in the dark at 8C and inspect weekly for the first eye movement. A clear 1-2mm sprout is needed as sometimes on red varieties eyes appear to open but are not actually ready to sprout. Record the date. 4) Now simply calculate the number of days between the TI date and dormancy break. You will find that for your variety this is a pretty good predictor of dormancy break regardless of the different growing season.

The other day, I went to the farm with some of my siblings to harvest corn. My mom insisted that she wanted to have some roasted corn that afternoon. As I took my bucket and headed to the farm to harvest a small amount of corn for roasting, I discovered that everything was dried up. At some point, I almost gave up on the quest for fresh corn. Nevertheless, I started moving from one stalk to another, harvesting everything. Soon, my siblings joined me, and after some hours of coordination, they all felt tired because there was quite a bit to harvest. As one of them picked up the harvested corn and started leaving, I insisted that I wasn't going anywhere until the farm was completely harvested. In my determination to finish, I noticed that the remaining corn was covered with strange weeds and creepy plants. However, upon closer inspection, I found some healthy and good-looking maize and even a few fresh ears in some areas. I forged through the thick grass, feeling ambushed at times. While harvesting, I reflected on the saying "Good things do not come easy ,📌." I realized that good things do not come to us; we have to seek them out and sometimes work hard to obtain them. 📌Determination will always yield great results, no matter the obstacles we face. 📌Until you accomplish your set goals, do not give up. 📌Lastly, my siblings almost discouraged me. If you are on your way to achieving your goals, take control and do not allow anyone to shift your focus. Love, #Glorious ©️Gloryinspire #Lightoftheworld
