Today in Belgian newspaper De Tijd: Even during off-peak hours and weekends, traffic jams are reaching record levels 🚘 Our analysis of national motorway figures for 2019, 2023, and 2024, alongside Flemish data from motorways and regional roads, reveals a striking shift: traditional rush hours are fading, replaced by consistently high traffic volumes throughout the day. This evolving pattern highlights the need for smart digital solutions that optimise travel times, improve traffic flow, and promote alternative transport modes. By leveraging data, Be-Mobile provides insights that help policymakers and companies make smart mobility decisions. #trafficinsights #trafficinBelgium #smartmobility

I realize this post might not make a difference, but I have no other outlet to express my frustration. How can Deutsche Bahn’s service be so poor? Every time, they come up with excuses like malfunctioning doors, staff shortages, track repairs, or technical issues. The trains are never on time, not even once. It seems like there’s a major political controversy brewing between the car manufacturers and Deutsche Bahn. Deutsche Bahn’s service has been unreliable with frequent delays and last-minute cancellations. Even more frustrating is the lack of updates on the DB Navigator app or station information screens, leaving passengers confused and stranded. This is not just a matter of inconvenience, but a disruption to people’s daily lives, leading to missed appointments and financial losses. On one hand, punctuality is a must in Germany, but on the other hand, you have no choice in the matter. The Deutsche Bahn website contains an error: Instead of "Price information not possible", travellers should be told "Price information not wanted" when it comes to tickets from other rail operators. DB's refusal to sell European Sleeper tickets on its dominant platforms, while promoting its own and partners' services, exemplifies anti-competitive behaviour and undermines the shift toward sustainable travel. Having convenient, fair, non-discriminatory, and transparent rail ticketing will benefit the sector as a whole. Users and taxpayers should have the right to access the “full menu” of transport options and easily compare them directly on their preferred ticketing platform. It's time for the German government to intervene and ensure the non-discriminatory sale of all tickets for the common good. #competition #consumers #rail #ticketing

Major works are happening on the A7 bridge over the Noordhollands Kanaal near Purmerend in the Netherlands. The bridge needs strengthening to accommodate heavy traffic, and this project is expected to last for five months from the 29th of April. Because of the works, the N247 also experiences serious traffic disruptions in the morning, also impacting my commuting with public transport to office… Time to dive into the details with TomTom Traffic Analytics data comparing the last 2 weeks of May '23 with May '24. Three interesting insights: 1. The volume of traffic on the N247 in the last 2 weeks of May '24 increased with 41% compared to the last 2 weeks of May in '23. 2. The volume of traffic coming from Hoorn travelling over the N247 was 3.5 times higher in May '24 compared to May '23. 3. Average travel time on the N247 from the N244 to the Ring A10 between 6 and 9 AM increased with 29%. On a Tuesday this was 43%, which is approximately 10 min longer than Tuesdays in May in 2023.

When one considers that the bikeshed area is typically 9x the size of the walkshed, the bike-transit (train) combination is truly a powerful "magic bullet" For more on this topic, you might enjoy my classic episode with Roland Kager here: https://lnkd.in/exWr7-n
Last year, NS (#DCEnetwork) OV-fietsen were used a record 5.9 million times. The Dutch rail company's share bikes have become a backbone of the public transport network in the Netherlands. The 22.000 bikes, available in 300 locations, provide an affordable last-mile option for train users. https://lnkd.in/e2xxz9a8

With the adoption of Postulate 24.4244 Töngi in the Swiss National Council, an important step has been taken to guide the future of #automatedmobility in a sustainable direction. While AVs promise opportunities, they also pose risks if not properly regulated—particularly the potential for increased traffic caused by cheaper, convenient robotaxis, a scenario already highlighted in the “Effects of Automated Driving” report by Office fédéral des routes Office fédéral des routes OFROU (2020), which emphasizes the need to prioritize collective use of AVs to prevent a surge in unnecessary traffic and excessive road congestion. 𝗪𝗵𝗮𝘁 𝗱𝗼𝗲𝘀 𝘁𝗵𝗲 𝗽𝗼𝘀𝘁𝘂𝗹𝗮𝘁𝗲 𝗽𝗿𝗼𝗽𝗼𝘀𝗲? It tasks the Federal Council with studying and reporting on regulatory options that ensure automated driving promotes shared, sustainable mobility instead of worsening traffic. Concrete measures could include: - Encouraging carpooling and shared AV services - On-demand mobility solutions - Tools to influence transport demand and increase vehicle occupancy. 𝗪𝗵𝘆 𝗮𝗰𝘁 𝗻𝗼𝘄? The new ordinance on automated driving, entering into force on March 1, 2025, sets the stage for AV deployment in Switzerland. But discussions about further regulations must start now, not in the next decade, to ensure AVs benefit the population by reducing traffic and improving environmental impact. This postulate also reflects Europe’s vision: leverage automated mobility as a tool to reduce the number of vehicles on the road, unlike the path unfolding in some other regions. By acting early, Switzerland can lead the way toward smarter, greener cities. 🌱✨ SAAM is committed to promoting policies that ensure AVs are part of the solution, not the problem.
