🇺🇸 USA: 1000 public transit agencies now produce GTFS! The US was later than the EU and Japan in formalizing policy on transit schedule data. Quick implementation is making up for lost time. This week the Federal Transit Administration released the first data since GTFS became a part of the National Transit Database (NTD) reporting requirements. 1013 public transit agencies submitted GTFS feeds from across the country. This data will be used for service planning, analysis, accessibility, and in common maps apps that help the public use transit service. I'm sure many of our followers will have seen this news story across the UK news media today focussing on the level of dissatisfaction with specific roads. The focus is primarily on journey times and speeds, although safety is included in the main report (https://lnkd.in/eyEy5jde) and is largely ignored by the press. Given the focus on journey time in the responses we wondered if our data partners TomTom had any information that could perhaps explain the different ratings for the most popular (M40) and least popular (M42) motorways. One great statistics you can access as a part of their "Traffic Stats" package is "Planning Time Index". This shows the level of variability between the average an slowest travel times. For the M40 the difference is only 20 minutes for a journey that takes around an hour and a half. For the M42 it's around 19 minutes despite the journey being only half an hour! Average speeds on both motorways were well below the speed limit at 65mph (M40) and 49mph (M42). Given a choice, we suspect that driver son the M42 would be more than happy with lower average speed if journey times were more reliable. Had some fun debating the very real issue of establishing a well connected transport system in a world dominated by cars with a few industry colleagues Gaurish Wagle, Nadeem Shakir, Omar Al-Battaineh and David Carrignon. A few key points from our discussion: 1. We need more options, public transport and space for people whether on foot or using micromobility must be provided. All those public transport plans need to be delivered. 2. We need to be more flexible in the development of new infrastructure, and in the use of existing infrastructure. The rigidity of design standards should be questioned, and reviewed against what is actually required in the context of a development or project. 3. We need to use the data to guide us. Data is more available now than ever, every new app in the transport system is telling us more about travel behaviour and what levers could be used to arrive at the mobility outcomes we desire. We all need to be conscious of the desicions we make in the planning and design process, and we should learn from our mistakes.

In a significant move towards modernizing our national highway tolling system, the GOI amended the National Highways (NH) Fee Rule (2024) bringing some progressive changes to how tolls are collected. Let’s break down the key differences and why they matter: 1️⃣ New Toll Collection Technologies:   - Old Rule (2008): Toll collection was limited to FASTag and conventional methods.   - Amended Rule (2024): Toll collection will utilize Global Navigation Satellite System (GNSS) and Automatic Number Plate Recognition (ANPR), alongside FASTag. These advanced systems will ensure faster, more accurate tolling with less reliance on manual processes. 2️⃣ Introduction of GNSS Technology:   - Old Rule (2008): No mention of GNSS.   - Amended Rule (2024): The inclusion of GNSS-based tolling means vehicles will have a satellite-linked device that tracks the distance travelled and there will be a dedicated GNSS lane at toll plazas for these vehicles. Non-compliance is penalized with a double user fee. 3️⃣ Automated 20 Km Exemption:   - Old Rule (2008): If you lived within 20 km of a toll plaza, you had to manually apply for exemptions by submitting documents.   - Amended Rule (2024): With the power of GNSS, this process becomes *fully automated. If your vehicle travels within 20 km, the system will automatically exempt you from tolls. No paperwork, no hassle. This transition to smart tolling will significantly reduce congestion, enhance transparency, and make travel smoother for millions of commuters every day. This is the beginning of a distance-based tolling system—a first for India! Technology like GNSS and ANPR, are not just collecting tolls, these are shaping the future of how we navigate our roads. 🤯 We built a toolkit for Bus Connectivity Assessments in under a month 🤯 Immediately after receiving the Bus Connectivity Assessment guidance one month ago, many of our Local Authority and Consultancy partners asked us for support in answering Question 37. Within weeks, we developed a toolkit in partnership with Julian Moss from WSP in the UK specifically to answer the quantitative analysis question of the Bus Connectivity Assessment. Simply select a geography, choose a bus network data source (such as the Bus Open Data Service or Traveline), and optionally adjust the destination definitions. Results are provided in an interactive dashboard with visualisations that help you quickly understand your bus network's connectivity scores. The custom Podaris:Insight template automatically fetches authoritative data from sources such as Ordnance Survey, NHS England, and the Department for Education based on the destination types defined in the DfT’s guidance. Where authoritative data sources are not available, it fetches Point of Interest data from #OpenStreetMap. Podaris:Insight runs transport analysis calculations in minutes and provides the data required for Local Transport Authorities to answer the five quantitative metrics asked by the Department for Transport (DfT), United Kingdom for the Bus Connectivity Assessments (B1 - B5): 1️⃣ B1 Catchment analysis: Percentage of the population within 30 minute journey time to a destination 2️⃣ B2 Peak services: Number of high-frequency bus services to destination, defined as service offering > 6 buses per hour during peak hours 3️⃣ B3 Off-peak services: Off-peak service levels to destination, based on the number of buses per hour 4️⃣ B4 Journey time analysis: Journey time per passenger journey to destinations relative to the average bus journey in your LTA area 5️⃣ B5 Bus stop access: Percentage of the population within a 500m catchment of a bus stop connecting to the destination. 🎉 The toolkit is available today for all Podaris users and is being used to support the bus connectivity assessments for 1-in-5 of England’s Local Transport Authorities!
