Ever wondered how early career exploration can shape the future? I’ve found that diving in early sets the stage for both- professional and personal growth, especially in dynamic fields like hospitality. During my time at Jamboree Education Private Limited, I had the opportunity to help high-school students find internships and explore career options. I saw firsthand how aligning them with their passions early on could lead to meaningful success. After all, it’s not just about choosing a career; it’s about discovering what truly lights you up. For instance, imagine yourself assisting with event planning, greeting customers at the front desk, or working in a busy kitchen. By fusing academic knowledge with real-world experience, these practical skills build a strong foundation for your future and prepare you for the needs of the industry. What I find most inspiring is seeing how young professionals grow through these experiences in the hospitality sector. They’re not just preparing for jobs; they’re positioning themselves to lead, innovate, and drive positive change. By diving in early, they set themselves up for careers with opportunities to drive meaningful contributions, from promoting sustainability to enhancing guest experiences. My first job interview was at Leo's Restaurant, a local family-owned restaurant in my hometown. I was barely 16 years old and had just gotten my driver's permit. Most people who applied at Leo's just filled out a piece of paper at the counter and left, hoping to hear back. My application process went a bit differently. I got an "interview" with the owner because of my dad's connection with him in our town's Small Business Association. We scheduled a time together and I got to chat with him for 30 minutes. He asked me some of the typical questions you'd expect about why I want to work there and what do I know about the restaurant business, but there was one question that changed the way I was thinking about this job: "When you're done working here, who do you want to be?" Hmm... that was an unexpectedly deep question. 1. Isn't this just a job at a small restaurant? 2. Do you not want me to be here forever? 3. Is this going to be life-changing? But this question taught me the lesson that everyone talks about... Every job you have is an opportunity. Looking back, my answer was telling for the rest of my career. "I want to be more comfortable and confident talking to people I don't know." The owner smiled and answered, "Well you've come to the right place. Can you come in on Saturday?" That one question made me realize this job was going to push me out of my comfort zone and I'm all the better for it. Four and a half years later, I left Leo's after being a busser, waiter, back-of-house, host, and manager with skills I never would have had before. I was leaving for an internship that I got an interview for because of a shift I picked up on a Saturday night at Leo's. Another story for another day 😉 #CareerJourney #FirstJob #InterviewQuestions

I still get excited to see airplanes and helicopters in the air. Even today, I often step outside just to watch them pass by, marveling like a child. From the days when simply going to an ATM was an adventure because it meant experiencing air conditioning for a few minutes, to now having a comfortable life—what a journey it has been for so many of us middle-class folks. Remember the time when all your relatives went on vacations, and you stayed home during holidays, wishing you could experience the same? And now, when you finally book those tickets for yourself and your family, doesn’t it feel surreal? You deserve that. You’ve earned it. There was a time when Pizza Mania or a Margherita pizza from Domino’s felt like the height of luxury, and when a simple McAloo Tikki burger was the ultimate treat at McDonald’s. Fast forward to today, if you’re sitting on recliner seats at a cinema or enjoying a fine-dining meal, don’t let anyone’s judgment hold you back. You’ve worked hard to be here. From getting refused a keypad phone to now using the latest iPhones, every step of progress tells a story of resilience and hard work. Life is meant to be lived, and so are the luxuries you’ve earned. Celebrate your milestones and treat yourself without guilt. At the same time, let’s not forget to thank our parents. They sacrificed their own dreams and indulgences so that we could be where we are today. We don’t know how much life is left for us or our parents, so make them realize what luxury is. Just say to your parents: "Kaha jaoge vacations pe, tickets aur hotel main book kar dunga." #life #job #family #worklife #luxury #balance #middleclass #internship

'The Lumpkin Limelight' is a weekly feature highlighting students, faculty, and staff practicing our five strategic pillars: 1) ENGAGEMENT 2) INVESTING IN GROWTH AND QUALITY 3) FOSTERING INNOVATION 4) DEVELOPING RESOURCES 5) CELEBRATING ACHIEVEMENT BS in Hospitality and Tourism - https://lnkd.in/dBG7KzmA The Hospitality and Tourism program (HTM) prepares students for a leadership position in the global hospitality and tourism industry. The BS in Hospitality and Tourism is a relatively new degree program and recently became part of the School of Business but has 30+ year-old roots at Eastern Illinois University as a concentration within other programs. The curriculum provides industry-specific courses, includes either a Business Administration or Entrepreneurship minor, and integrates relevant courses from other disciplines such as recreation administration, geography, and communication studies. Career paths for graduates of the program include Hotel General Managers, Sales and Convention Managers, Wedding Planners, Group Sales and Meeting Managers, Dining Room Managers, Human Resource Managers, and Franchisee Support Managers. Many students attend an annual Hospitality Career Fair in Chicago hosted by DePaul University to identify potential internship or career placements and build their professional network. Students engage in authentic learning experiences such as guest speakers, industry-based field trips, a hotel management simulation, wine and beer production courses, conference attendance, and community-based projects. Two industry-based internship-type experiences are required. The HTM program relies on our alumni, scattered throughout the country but with a large presence in the Chicagoland area, for its support of the program and providing professional development advice and opportunities to current students. When asked for assistance, our alumni always answer the call, displaying a true spirit of hospitality and serving as role models for which we are most grateful. #lumpkinlimelight #hospitality #tourism #adventure #business #entrepreneurship #travel #dining
