Good discussion with Christien Kafton from KTVU 2 yesterday on the recent news about autonomous vehicles being targeted by taggers. We discussed the challenges that come with deploying advanced technologies in urban environments and the societal response to change. Baidu scores first Hong Kong robotaxi license: Chinese tech giant Baidu is awarded a five-year license to test autonomous vehicles in Hong Kong. Baidu is already operating commercial robotaxi fleets in numerous cities in mainland China and it has signaled an intent to expand into other Asian markets in the near future. #electricvehicles #zeroemissions

Tesla’s planned robotaxi launch has raised eyebrows in China China’s aiming to lead the world in autonomous driving, and the numbers speak for themselves. "Domestically, Beijing has issued a total of 16,000 test licenses for autonomous vehicles, according to the Ministry of Public Security, more than any other country. In all, 32,000 kilometers of roads in China have been opened for autonomous vehicle testing." An official close to the situation said, "The Chinese government is also encouraging companies to go overseas so we can have the first-mover advantage before Tesla or other American companies take the lead". "Tesla's robotaxi plan has set off an alarm in both the Chinese government and companies' heads telling them to speed up or we'll be left behind." With the US and China unlikely to let each other operate autonomous vehicles on home turf, this race is going global. Will our food be delivered by autonomous robots in the future? No, not in the future, but right now! Starship Technologies delivery robots are already part of the street scene in some cities in Europe and the USA. More than six million deliveries have been successfully made with the small, autonomous vehicle, and expansion into other countries is imminent. However, the company, which was founded in Estonia in 2014, is not yet present in Switzerland. Nevertheless, autonomous delivery vehicles are nothing new here either. In 2023, for example, our partner LOXO ran a successful pilot project with its autonomous delivery vehicle "Alpha", which delivered the groceries ordered by Schindler Group employees completely autonomously on a public road.
