My 2024 LinkedIn Rewind: 2024 proved that when we combine AI innovation with social impact, transformation isn't just possible - it's inevitable. From townships, classrooms to corporate boardrooms, this year taught me that true innovation happens when we build bridges between technology and community needs. Key transformations across our ventures: → DigiYouth Africa expanded reach to youth through AI-driven training → Mesh-Ed Solutions trained leaders in human-centric AI adoption → Pan African Chamber of Commerce African Chamber of Commerce initiatives advocated for change and innovation But the real impact? —> Watching township entrepreneurs embrace AI tools, seeing young people discover tech careers they never thought possible, and helping organizations understand that innovation must serve everyone. In a recent interview with VENTURES AFRICA, our very own June Barasa, Technical Product Owner at Deimos, shares her compelling journey and insights on fostering women's growth in the tech sector. June, who oversees the development of Salus Cloud, a DevSecOps platform built by Deimos to transform the landscape of application deployment explains the impact of her role: ‘First of all, it’s about diversity. Diversity and inclusion are very important. It makes the building of a product much better. Take Salus for example. It is a technical product built by engineers for engineers.’ With a focus on building skills and securing leadership roles, June exemplifies how crucial it is to support women through and beyond their initial tech careers. ❓ Seen any NGOs doing great work leveraging tech? Give them a shout out in the comments! 📣 NGO leaders - how clear are you on how new technologies (e.g. AI) can transform your NGO's impact? A look into the latest Digital Skills Survey from CanadaHelps reveals an unsurprising trend: charities increasingly recognize the immense potential of technologies like AI but... many struggle with effective implementation. In fact, between 2021 and 2023, awareness of the potential benefits has exploded across the social sector (see chart below) but... the ability to translate this awareness into action remains limited. 🤔 So what can you do? Charities need to focus on 3 critical areas: - Develop internal digital skills and capabilities - Expand financial investments in technology - Establish robust strategies and governance structures Sounds easy when it's a 3-bullet list but we all know it is complex and takes investments of time, focus and money -- things most NGOs do not have in spare supply. That said, if NGOs wait too long, the pace of innovation will quickly create a widening gap between their capacity to implement and what will actually be needed to catch up.
