A huge thank you to Siglinda Lösch from Vinimark - The Wine Company for setting up a fascinating meeting for SWR’s research director, Dr Peter Stanbury, to Reyneke Wines near Stellenbosch in the Western Cape of South Africa. Reyneke was the first Demeter-certified biodynamic vineyard in South Africa, and as Peter’s visit showed, they continue to innovate. Peter met with Armand Esterhuizen, and Ishaan Lilje the farm manager who is leading an ambitious process of expansion which will see the planting of around 30 hectares of new vines in the next 5 years. This new vineyard is being carefully designed to take account of climate change. The rows of vines will be arranged so as to minimise soil erosion but also to allow water run off to be captured in two new reservoirs on the site. This means that the vineyard will be largely self-sufficient in water. The planting also takes advantage of prevailing winds from nearby False Bay, and includes wildlife corridors which, amongst of other things will bring natural predators into the vines to tackle pests. It was a great pleasure to meet the Reyneke team—these are the people driving meaningful change in the wine industry. Once again, thank you to Siglinda and the Vinimark team for facilitating this visit and for being such valued members of SWR. #SustainableWine #BiodynamicFarming #ClimateAction #Sustainability

The National EcoVineyards program, funded by Wine Australia , supports winegrape growers in their endeavours to enhance soil health, establish ground covers and increase functional biodiversity in their vineyards. Delivered by Retallack Viticulture Pty Ltd , the program is running an event in Margaret River on 3 December for growers interested in practical ways to manage insect pests naturally and improve the resilience of their vineyards. Join the EcoVineyards team and a line-up of guest presenters to learn more about: • The link between plant health and insect attack (especially sap sucking insects - scale and mealybugs) • How to measure leaf brix and why it is important? • How to speed up IPM scouting in the field • Biocontrol of LBAM, grapevine scale, and mealybugs • Local microbat species and how to monitor them • Access to a new Best Practice Management Guide on functional biodiversity • The impact of agrochemicals on natural enemies Register now https://lnkd.in/gwYyU8dz Margaret River Wine Association #aussiewine

National Vineyard Register Takes Shape for Australia's Wine Sector 🍇 Wine Australia has commenced the groundwork for a National Vineyard Register, a key initiative identified in the One Grape & Wine Sector Plan. This register will track vital data on Australia's vineyards, including the varieties planted, vine age, and geographic location. The project is funded through the Department of Agriculture, Fisheries and Forestry's $3.5 million Grape and Wine Sector Long-term Viability Support Package to address the oversupply of red wine. 📊 Wine Australia CEO Dr Martin Cole emphasised the importance of this register, stating that it will provide essential data for decision-making, helping to balance supply and demand. It will also support biosecurity efforts and foster sector collaboration. The register will enable transparent data sharing across the supply chain and assist in strategic planning for the future growth of the Australian wine industry. 🔍 Consultation with the industry is critical, and Wine Australia will engage widely to ensure the register meets the sector's needs. The framework for the register is expected by June 2025, with a planned completion by June 2026. Regular updates will be provided to stakeholders through briefings and webinars to ensure a collaborative approach to this industry-transforming initiative. #WineAustralia #VineyardRegister #GrapeAndWineSector #WineIndustry #DataDrivenAgriculture #Sustainability #Biosecurity #AustralianWine

Happy #FloraFriday from this amazing four-headed Pindo Palm (Butia odorata) at WFSU Public Media! Multiple crowns in palms are quite rare! The Pindo Palm is native to northern Argentina, southern Brazil, Paraguay, and Uruguay. It is the most cold-hardy of the feather-leafed palms and is tolerant of drought. Pindo Palms help create a tropical atmosphere on our campus and require nearly no maintenance. The fruit it produces is edible and is sometimes made into jelly-which is why it is also nick-named "Jelly Palm". The fruit turns orange when ripe, and has a flavor that has been described as being sweet yet also tart, reminiscent of both apricots and a pineapple-banana mixture. FSU has many older Pindo Palms that are quite valuable because they are rather slow growers and this one at WFSU is especially rare and valuable! #FSU #FSUFacilities #WFSU #BuildingExcellence #PindoPalm

🚨 Did you know Barbados imports 95% of its honey? 🚨 Coming out of my research for my Master’s thesis in Financial and Business Economics—and my affiliation with the Barbados Apiculture Association—I’m exploring a topic that’s as sweet as it is urgent: apiculture in Barbados. 🐝 Bees are far more than honey producers; they’re the unsung heroes of our agriculture. Globally, these tiny creatures are responsible for pollinating 35% of the crops we eat. Yet here in Barbados, while the conditions for honey production are great, Barbados imported nearly 1.4 million kilograms of honey, spending almost 9.5 million Barbados dollars between the years 2012 and 2021. In the first episode of this series, we dive into the importance of bees for our food security, the challenges local beekeepers face, and the incredible untapped economic potential of the apiculture sector. This series isn’t just about beekeeping—it’s about exploring how we can: ✅ Reduce honey imports ✅ Support local entrepreneurs ✅ Strengthen our agricultural sector ✅ Protect our environment Join me as I uncover the story behind the buzz and spotlight an industry that can transform our economy and our future. 🎥 Watch Episode 1: The Buzz About Bees: A Key to Food Security in Barbados Let me know your thoughts in the comments, and stay tuned for the next episode, where we’ll explore the economics of honey production. 🌟 #Barbados #Apiculture #Beekeeping #Agriculture #Sustainability #EconomicDevelopment

🌍 Taking care of the Earth and those who cultivate it: at Cordier, we talk about it today, but we act all year round. #EarthDay Soil health in viticulture: unique collaboration on vine cover between InVivo Foundation, Bioline and Cordier by InVivo. Soil health in viticulture is one of the 4 themes of Cordier CSR strategy #Terra360, as it is a major priority on economic, societal and environmental levels. It plays a crucial role in improving grape productivity, regulating the use of inputs and ensuring wine quality. It is in this context that the InVivo Fondation, Cordier and Bioline teams have been working together on the theme of vine weed control. This project, which began in Languedoc-Roussillon with some 30 "Pioneer" winegrowers from partner cooperative wineries, aims to measure and improve soil vitality, mitigate climatic and environmental impacts, and promote positive economic and social consequences. Supported by the InVivo Foundation, this approach provides invaluable support for winegrowers, from soil analysis to enhancing the value of their heritage. It helps guarantee the health and yield of the vines, to produce a quality wine that respects the environment. On April 4, winegrowers came to visit the Bioline teams on their test platform, to talk about vine weed control using Semences de France mixtures. The aim was to demonstrate how this technique increases profitability, reduces costs, enhances production and contributes to the structural and biological improvement of soils. It also has a positive environmental and social impact, helping to protect biodiversity, store water and carbon, and combat climate change. bioline by InVivo FONDS DE DOTATION INVIVO FOUNDATION InVivo #tiphaineDutrieux Franck ESCALES Robert Eden Sylvain Chaussé Marion Dubosqueille Thomas Bégon Charlotte de Lattre Robin Salmon MARIE ANGELE BENNAVAIL
