National Vineyard Register Takes Shape for Australia's Wine Sector 🍇 Wine Australia has commenced the groundwork for a National Vineyard Register, a key initiative identified in the One Grape & Wine Sector Plan. This register will track vital data on Australia's vineyards, including the varieties planted, vine age, and geographic location. The project is funded through the Department of Agriculture, Fisheries and Forestry's $3.5 million Grape and Wine Sector Long-term Viability Support Package to address the oversupply of red wine. 📊 Wine Australia CEO Dr Martin Cole emphasised the importance of this register, stating that it will provide essential data for decision-making, helping to balance supply and demand. It will also support biosecurity efforts and foster sector collaboration. The register will enable transparent data sharing across the supply chain and assist in strategic planning for the future growth of the Australian wine industry. 🔍 Consultation with the industry is critical, and Wine Australia will engage widely to ensure the register meets the sector's needs. The framework for the register is expected by June 2025, with a planned completion by June 2026. Regular updates will be provided to stakeholders through briefings and webinars to ensure a collaborative approach to this industry-transforming initiative. #WineAustralia #VineyardRegister #GrapeAndWineSector #WineIndustry #DataDrivenAgriculture #Sustainability #Biosecurity #AustralianWine

Nutritious, affordable, and beneficial to our ecosystems, oysters are having a moment. 🚧 Yet, as the industry sees a surge in demand, regulatory red tape threatens to stifle its growth. Producers face restrictions, like the need for triploid oysters to avoid reproduction risks, and struggle with the lack of UK hatcheries, putting future expansion at risk. Without clearer policies and more support for sustainable oyster farming, this boom may be short-lived. Grapes grafting is a fascinating horticultural technique that combines the strengths of different grapevine varieties to enhance growth and fruit quality. This method involves taking a cutting from one vine, known as the scion, and attaching it to another vine with a strong root system, known as the rootstock. The process not only allows for improved disease resistance but also helps in adapting the plant to various soil types and climates. By carefully selecting compatible varieties, growers can produce grapes that thrive in their environment while also achieving desirable flavors and characteristics. Mastering this technique requires skill and patience, but the rewards are plentiful—yielding healthier vines that bear fruit well-suited for winemaking or fresh consumption. Whether you're a professional vintner or an enthusiastic hobbyist, understanding grafting is essential for cultivating robust grapevines capable of producing exceptional harvests year after year. Exploring grape grafting opens up new possibilities for innovation in viticulture! #grapes #grafting #techniques #technology #farming #agriculture

📝 Alpine spruce, moss and forestry accents on the nose. While the acidity is low, the tannins are edgy and perfectly shaped to promote a giddy drinkability for this wine, that would be best with a slight chill. 🍷 This is the tasting note elaborated by our jury for the selected wine of Tenuta Maffone. #5StarWines2024 #WineWithoutWalls2024 #5StarWinestheBook #ItalianWine #VinoItaliano

📣 Our May 2024 e-news has been released! https://lnkd.in/ex47p24y 📣 We continue our journey around South Australia to Coonawarra Vignerons and gain insights into how biosecurity continues to be integrated into business and regional activities. We learn about the importance of biosecurity to Coonawarra given their proximity to the Victorian border, how biosecurity was integrated into the recent Australian Cabernet Symposium field day, and the importance placed on training staff and contractors in biosecurity. 📣 We share some sobering insights into the impacts of the recent Varroa mite incursion in NSW on the honey bee industry from Danney le Feuvre, CEO of the Australian Honey Bee Industry Council. After a 15 month long eradication campaign, final agreement was reached in early February to a ’transition to management’ plan. 📣 With our end of financial year at 30 April, we have taken a snapshot of the Register to examine changes to plantings and vineyard ownership over the last year. Given the current tough industry conditions, it was unsurprising to see a net decrease in the number of Registered Vineyard Owners in South Australia. 📣 Similarly, from a planting perspective, the state’s vineyard area has also declined. The largest changes in total vineyard area by variety on the Register at 30 April 2024 compared to 30 April 2023, were for Pinot Noir (largest positive change) and Cabernet Sauvignon (largest negative change). 📣 Should you be thinking about permanent vine removal, we urge you to be aware of biosecurity aspects and ensure you make contact with our office to report changes to your vineyard area on the Register.

Every oyster has a story! It's just one of the reasons I love profiling them. St. Simon oysters are farmed in Shippagan, #NewBrunswick, by the Mallet family. They operate the largest commercial hatchery in Eastern #Canada. Shippagan is a unique coastal town with a bountiful fishery, and is and one of the most northern regions for growing a Virginica oyster. #MaisonBeauSoleil is not far from there. St-Simon oysters are cultivated by the Mallet family, now in their third generation, the family-run farm is rooted in #science and #aquaculture expertise. Andre Mallet and his sons, Mark André and Martin, are dedicated to advancing the scientific understanding of #oysters and aquaculture. They also cultivate #BayScallops and manage a salt-water pond which is connected to Shippagan Bay by a tidal gate; this is where the oysters are reared before they are transferred to the bay. The shallow bays have the perfect environment for growing oysters. -Appellation: North America-eastern Canada, from the coastal town of Shippagan, in Saint-Simon Bay. Prime, cold productive waters for growing oysters. -Merroir: the area is covered with eelgrass and surrounded by peatlands and salt marshes. High levels of phytoplankton are present. Fishery of #Crab, #Shrimp, #Lobster, #Clams, #Mussels, #Bass fish, #RedFish and more. -Flavor notes: Salinity is medium to high, rich creamy sweet notes from the crunchy adductor that last with a slight minerality. Tasting some #Vegetal notes and mushroom. Full-meat, hard, deep shell, easy to shuck! 🌱 Nestled in Kent’s rolling hills, aka the “Garden of England,” Yotes Court Vineyard shows how innovative practices with an eye toward #regeneration can revolutionize winemaking. 📚 In my Forbes piece below, I highlight a number of themes of my recent book "#TheProfiteers: How Business Privatizes Profit and Socializes Cost," that Yotes Court exemplifies. 🍇 First is how and why a #sustainability focus can create opportunities for #innovation, in this case their work on new grape varieties. 🌿 Second is the benefits of #regenerative practices. They show how a focus on protecting the land in order to rebuild #soilhealth allows #nature to do most of the work. For instance, but integrating livestock, such as sheep 🐑, into their farming practices, Yotes Court uses nature’s own “lawnmowers” to manage growth and recycle nutrients. 📖 Learn more about how companies can strike this balance in both "The Profiteers" and also the article below!

#WineNews Meininger's International published an interesting article "Owners Who Neglect Vineyards in Bordeaux Will Face Fines" and for the first time, vineyard owners in #Bordeaux are facing penalties if they neglect their vineyards. Fines of up to €5,000 per hectare may be imposed. "Neglected vineyards are not just an eyesore; they pose a significant threat to viticulture by becoming breeding grounds for vine diseases such as Flavescence dorée (yellowing of the canopy). These abandoned plots are also suspected of increasing downy mildew pressure on neighboring vineyards. For years, industry associations and the administration of the Gironde department have advocated for sanitary clearings—a plea that French Agriculture Minister Marc Fesneau answered in February with multi-million-euro state aid and clearing premiums. Despite these efforts, the condition of Bordeaux's vineyards remains alarming. According to the industry platform "Vitisphere," the prefecture of the Gironde department acknowledged in a press release that "the number of reports and concerns about the many abandoned or neglected vineyard plots in the department is significant." These fallow areas are estimated to cover over 2,540 ha/ circa 6,300 acres, a consequence of declining wine consumption and unprofitable vineyard management.
