Every other Thursday afternoon, I catch up with Megan O’Brien and then Jessica Woodhouse MBA CMgr MCMI. We always cover a lot of ground. Some key themes from today: (1) The chasm between theory and reality: Most/all? of our insights are not original thoughts for humankind and it is easy to talk a good talk. Execution, walking the walk, is (much) more challenging, and there is no substitute for learning from doing. (2) Kind candour: Withholding feedback because it might hurt a colleague's feelings is often not the best choice for you, them or the organisation. The key is in how the feedback is delivered. (3) Operational decision-making: Cost/risk/time/effort/likelihood of success vs. benefit/impact should guide many/all our operational decisions, especially regarding changes or new ideas. (4) While the conversation around patient safety, human factors, non-technical skills, quality improvement, etc., may still be at an early stage in the veterinary sector, the importance of these concepts is a no-brainer. Progress may take time and be hindered by alternate priorities, but it must come! I've followed Liv's journey since Cambridge 8 years ago, and watching her grow has been inspiring. I wasn't sure what to expect after enrolling in the Human Savvy Medicine course, but it is safe to say that it significantly broadened my perspective and self-awareness. We often let our identity become inseparable from our work in the veterinary profession. Our journey to becoming vets or specialists is high-achieving and highly competitive. As a result, when opinions and clinical experience do not align, we treat each other as competitors rather than colleagues. This lack of camaraderie can become pervasive, with forums for collaboration becoming opportunities for intellectual grandstanding. We define ourselves as scientists yet allow our unconscious biases to skew our perceptions. Thankfully, we are experiencing an attitude shift and are perfectly positioned to lead this change. Working on ourselves is a humbling yet powerful journey that makes us more self-aware individuals and grounded professionals. Liv's insights challenge our thinking patterns and beliefs, helping us recognize and manage our triggers while training our logical minds to look beneath the surface. In the final part of our question series with Yubin Park, PhD, we delved into the challenges faced by leaders at risk-bearing entities. We explored the need for open dialogue about policy changes that could better serve both organizations and patients. One key question emerged: if given the opportunity, what changes would these leaders advocate for in policies and programs? “Often (as leaders) we don't ask enough questions and we just follow what's been already determined, and optimize based on it.” #HealthcareLeadership  #PolicyChange #PatientCare

#CornellILR assistant professor Brittany Bond and a research team at Cornell are conducting a clinical trial to help address the issue of burnout in the veterinary profession. “Teams can work together to reshape roles in ways that play to each person’s strengths. This approach can help ensure that everyone finds more meaning in their work,” said Bond, an organizational theorist and economic sociologist. “Our research shows that when employees are able to reimagine their jobs in this way, it can lead to significant reductions in emotional exhaustion, stress, and conflict between work and family life, all of which are major contributors to burnout and turnover.” Bond and her research team are looking for veterinary clinic managers, especially from small private practices, to participate. Scott Boden’s reputation as a partnership builder, strategic thinker and healthcare innovator earned him what it often does: an expanded job that hadn’t existed previously at Emory, that of Chief Partnership and Innovation Officer.
