🌟 Review my week with me - Bringing more transparency to being a MIA (Mom in Academia) 🌟 Monday 🌒 : Kids at home. We visited an indoor play park in the morning. Four Progress Meetings in the afternoon. Conducted the first meeting on my phone while getting the kids lunch. Quickly got my son down for a nap before start of second meeting. Finished meetings while my son was napping and my daughter played quietly or watched TV while I worked. Caught up on some AM work in the early evening after kids went to bed. Tuesday: Everyone back to school! Climbed. Worked on an upcoming grant application. Three Progress Meetings in the afternoon. Wednesday: Big writing day with major progress on my grant application. Feeling good about the draft. Two Progress Meetings in the afternoon. Thursday: Off-day so really stuck to my to-do list and focused on getting small, quick wins. Submitted a manuscript to Health Communication. Very exciting collaborator meeting with Valli F. and colleagues at Veterinarians Without Borders. Felt totally energized by this meeting and excited for things to come. Friday: Met with a Writing Specialist to talk through how to better support my trainees in writing their discussions (my least favourite section). Worked through my feedback queue. PhD advisory meeting with brilliant colleagues in the afternoon. Every other Thursday afternoon, I catch up with Megan O’Brien and then Jessica Woodhouse MBA CMgr MCMI. We always cover a lot of ground. Some key themes from today: (1) The chasm between theory and reality: Most/all? of our insights are not original thoughts for humankind and it is easy to talk a good talk. Execution, walking the walk, is (much) more challenging, and there is no substitute for learning from doing. (2) Kind candour: Withholding feedback because it might hurt a colleague's feelings is often not the best choice for you, them or the organisation. The key is in how the feedback is delivered. (3) Operational decision-making: Cost/risk/time/effort/likelihood of success vs. benefit/impact should guide many/all our operational decisions, especially regarding changes or new ideas. (4) While the conversation around patient safety, human factors, non-technical skills, quality improvement, etc., may still be at an early stage in the veterinary sector, the importance of these concepts is a no-brainer. Progress may take time and be hindered by alternate priorities, but it must come! Anyone else taking a different pace to start 2025? I've noticed something interesting about my approach this year. I'm unapologetically embracing it. Social media is buzzing with "fresh starts" and new launches. I'm focused on something different: compounding the impact of what's already working. After eight years of building businesses in the veterinary space, I've learned that sustainable growth isn't about big January resets. I used to be that person rushing into every new year at 100mph. (Ask me about my competitive rowing career sometime 😂). I've learned to slow down to speed up, my back has been a pretty powerful teacher on that 👀. The results? In these past few weeks, across the businesses we've: - Held space for so many awesome people to do big things - Spoken for a global pharmaceutical company - Led graduate workshops - Expanded our team with a marketing lead and new coach at Vet Empowered - Delivered multiple high-impact webinars None of this came from a January reset. 🤷🏻♀️ It's years of nurturing relationships, honing expertise, and staying committed to the long game. If you're feeling the pressure to make dramatic changes right now, remember: real growth comes from consistent, intentional action over time. I keep reminding myself of this too. #CornellILR assistant professor Brittany Bond and a research team at Cornell are conducting a clinical trial to help address the issue of burnout in the veterinary profession. “Teams can work together to reshape roles in ways that play to each person’s strengths. This approach can help ensure that everyone finds more meaning in their work,” said Bond, an organizational theorist and economic sociologist. “Our research shows that when employees are able to reimagine their jobs in this way, it can lead to significant reductions in emotional exhaustion, stress, and conflict between work and family life, all of which are major contributors to burnout and turnover.” Bond and her research team are looking for veterinary clinic managers, especially from small private practices, to participate.
