It's time to welcome your students to their 2025 science classrooms! The start of a new school year is the perfect opportunity to set the tone for curiosity, creativity, and collaboration. A warm welcome can spark excitement for learning and create an environment where students feel engaged from day one. Here are three ways to kick off the year in your science classroom: 1️⃣ Create a science-themed curiosity station – Set up a corner with intriguing items like fossils, unusual lab equipment, microscope slides (or even a fake murder scene!!) to ignite questions and wonder. 2️⃣ Get hands-on early – Start with a simple and exciting experiment, like making invisible ink or a density tower, to show students that science is all about exploration. 3️⃣ Incorporate student voice – Ask students to share a bit about themselves, including their favourite science-related topics or questions. It’s a great way to connect and shape your lessons around their interests. You can do this in a number of ways, such as using Play-Doh or a 'Fakebook' profile style activity. These teams will leverage digital learning platforms like ASU’s Learning @ Scale, E-TRIALS / ASSISTments, Terracotta / Canvas, and Kinetic / OpenStax to conduct groundbreaking research on education, retention, and learning interventions. The latest paper from the University of Colorado Boulder featuring high-impact tutoring from Saga Education has been accepted into the prestigious International Artificial Intelligence in Education Society (IAIED). The paper, "Aligning Tutor Discourse Supporting Rigorous Thinking with Tutee Content Mastery for Predicting Math Achievement," shows how tutors' talk strategies and student performance on a practice system can predict achievement! What if education was completely reshaped about empowering students to tell their stories? What if lessons and assignments were seen as ways for students to express themselves? And I'm talking about the student perspective here. I think many educators DO view things in this manner. But the students don't. When students work on homework it is seen as busywork. It is seen as a barrier to what that student actually wants to be doing. It is seen as just something they have to do to get the grade to pass the class to move on to the next thing. What if instead.... Students saw completing Algebra practice problems as a means to helping them define their identity. Students wrote essays not because they had to...but because it was a method of self-expression. Students completed science labs and turned in lab reports as a means of them reflecting on how compounds contribute to who they are. What if the entire education process revolved around inspiring, empowering, and leading students to tell their story, through a multiplicity of disciplines, skills, mediums, and methods? I know this is esoteric, idealistic, and outside the box. But imagine students graduating with a clear sense of who they are, what value they can bring to the world, and the ability to bring their voice to the global community. I'm just an educational technologist who sees the point of technology as means of empowering students to tell their stories, who they are, and what their worldview is. Because when we have a clear sense of how stories are formed and are able to articulate who we are through our own stories, we build identity, memory, and community. We build heritage and legacy. I want to work alongside teachers to craft lessons and projects that allow students to tell their story. If we can inspire students to view all of their education as molding and shaping who they are, maybe students will take more ownership and active interest in it. If graduating students don't have a clear worldview, or know how to shape and curate their worldview, or how their worldview positions them within the wider world, then are we really doing our job as educators? #education #lifelonglearning #growmindset #storytelling
