An okay book, providing a history of cattle ranching in the American West, with a focus on the 1880s development of the industry in the Northern Plains. The author, American journalist Christopher Knowlton, explains how the initial post-Civil War success of stock breeding in Texas created a financial bubble as capital, mostly from England, saturated the market. The expansion of the industry from its Texas beginnings, and its evolution as it grew in size and industrialized in practice, are covered via the personal stories of many of its participants. Knowlton ends by explaining how the harshness of the 1886-1887 winter, coupled with competition from other western industries and a re-structuring of the market by the railroad and meat packing firms, burst this bubble. Knowlton presents many interesting facts and insightful assessments. However, he isn’t able to bring them all together into a single thesis. In the rush to tell so many individual stories, the book becomes a loose collection of related histories rather than a themed narrative. Nevertheless, this is a great book for understanding the business dynamics of the cowboy’s trade. Highly recommended for anyone interested in the economic and social aspects of cattle ranching during the formative period of the American West.

Smaller cattle feeders struggle with being able to learn from their data because it is such a small sample size. The variables from start to finish on a few pens leaves them dependent on guessing or misinterpreting information. One of the solutions to learning something new is expanding their network by partnering on a few cattle in a custom yard. Two ways of taking it a step further would be 1) Partner in a different geographic weather pattern area. 2) Partner on cattle that is different than their normal kind. Maybe, let someone else buy them. The people who do this have an advantage from my perspective. Before someone responds to this with bad experiences, I get it and have been there. Cattlemen should do their due diligence and do it on a small volume, for sure. #Balance4ward
