It is no secret the business of health care is experiencing one of its most tumultuous times in history. There is no shortage of reports on the challenging financial health care marketplace. This creates complexities for the C-Suite, challenging them to successfully operate and navigate through the tumult while also staying true to their organizations’ missions, values and visions. These times also create challenges in building and launching large-scale philanthropy efforts. Accordant’s Wave Campaign™ model was developed during less turbulent times; yet, has the adaptability, innovation and momentum generation needed to navigate stormy weather. This model is case-driven, clinician-partnered, organization-aligned and passion-fueled to meet and exceed donor needs. Wave campaigning is structured to ensure sustained philanthropy. Grateful engagement (formerly known as the “grateful patient program”) is a strategy that guides health care organizations to proactively engage grateful patients and families in sharing and celebrating stories of gratitude. Grateful patient engagement also allows patients and families to express their gratitude for care through philanthropy. A key success factor is the development of strategic partnerships with key internal allies (such as physicians, clinicians, nursing leaders, service line leaders and administrative leaders) to help identify, cultivate and steward grateful patient and family donors. A successful grateful engagement strategy not only elevates gratitude within health care organizations but also enables a streamlined and robust approach to generating continuous pools of new prospective donors. Therefore, grateful engagement should be embraced by every member of the organization’s development team and should be a top priority for the organization’s daily work. Whether embarking upon your organization’s first grateful engagement strategy or fine-tuning existing efforts, check out this piece from Accordant's Erin M. Stitzel, FAHP, and Debbie Ferguson, CFRE, for five key elements that are essential in guiding your endeavor: https://ow.ly/Ah7Z50SLVyv #healthcare #philanthropy #gratefulengagement #strategy

Health foundations have a significant opportunity to harness the influence and involvement of board members as great allies in advancing the mission. Too often, however, board members begin their tenure with a significant disadvantage in that their roles and responsibilities have been poorly or shallowly defined and explained. Board members generally come to nonprofit organizations with the desire to affect positive change. They wish to leverage their unique skills, insights and influence to move the mission forward. Yet, many board members will confide they were thwarted in their intentions to contribute by not having access to the information needed to be successful. Given the competitive advantage board members can bring to the organization, it is essential to start and to continue supporting a high value relationship with each board member through access to information and tools. Clinicians aren’t just healers; they are also experts in patient care. Involving them in philanthropic decision-making allows health care organizations to leverage their firsthand experience and knowledge, ensuring funds are directed to areas with the greatest potential to improve health outcomes. When clinicians actively participate in philanthropy, their personal touch helps organizations build deeper, more meaningful relationships, fostering greater donor loyalty and more generous contributions. Their involvement adds a genuine sense of trust and authenticity to the foundation’s mission, enhancing its credibility and appeal. However, clinician involvement is not always easy. Even in the best of times, the overarching overlay of burnout makes engagement difficult. Check out this week's eNews for a piece from Accordant's Susan Attwell, CFRE, on how to cultivate mutually fulfilling clinician-philanthropy partnerships and effectively address clinician burnout simultaneously: https://ow.ly/PQwn50SE6Ep #healthcare #philanthropy #clinicianpartnership

In healthcare, excellence is not just a goal—it's a continual journey. While healthcare professionals work tirelessly to advance patient care, philanthropy plays an equally critical role in shaping the future of healthcare, driving innovation, and improving lives. National Philanthropy Day is recognized worldwide to celebrate philanthropy and those who give. At the SJRH Foundation, we see every single day of the year how donors help provide the resources needed for state-of-the-art technology, research and critical patient services that go beyond what is covered by traditional funding sources. Today's healthcare challenges are complex. However, our donor community continues to fund solutions to these challenges, support our dedicated hospital staff, and invest in continuous patient care and outcomes improvement. Philanthropy in healthcare is not just an act of giving—it's an investment in a healthier tomorrow. And for that, we are endlessly grateful. So on this special day, and every other day of the year, we say THANK YOU. #NationalPhilanthropyDay #ThankYou #MakingADifference #HealthcareHeroes #PhilanthropyMatters

Health care organizations face an inflection point. With operating margins hovering at historically low levels, organizations urgently require funds not only to invest in core needs like physical plants, technology and clinical programs but also to fuel growth, to drive care transformation and to address expanding priorities around social drivers of health, access, equity and well-being. This makes it critical for all of the health care organization’s financial resources to be deployed to their most effective and best use; yet many organizations still diminish the potential impact of philanthropy by using charitable dollars for initiatives outside their strategy. Given how philanthropy deployment can significantly influence a health care organization’s ability to invest in future opportunities and outcomes, organizations should pursue alignment between strategy and philanthropy.
