The Most Underrated Question Every Business Analyst Should Ask! When working with stakeholders, I’ve learned that asking the right questions can make all the difference. But there’s one question that’s often overlooked and it is: “What problem are we really trying to solve?” Why is this question so powerful? - It challenges assumptions and reveals the true business need. - It prevents teams from jumping to solutions too quickly. - It ensures we focus on delivering value—not just ticking boxes. As a real example, during one of my projects, a stakeholder insisted on building a complex dashboard with dozens of metrics. Instead of diving into the details, I paused and asked, “What decision are you trying to make with this data?” The answer surprised me. They only needed three key metrics to identify performance gaps. I give him alternative business solution instead of focusing on the technical side/feasibility. By refocusing the scope, we saved time, reduced costs, and delivered exactly what they needed. Asking the right questions is the foundation of effective business analysis.
