JOB SUMMARY: Under the direction of the Director of Operations, manage the Finance Department for the organization overseeing all accounting-related activities. The comptroller will be responsible for the day-to-day operations of the Finance Team, including preparing budgets and financial statements, ensuring compliance with financial regulations, and managing internal and external audits.

Job Duties Include But Are Not Limited To

  • Ensure accurate and timely processing of all financial transactions, including accounts payable, receivable, payroll, and general ledger entries.
  • Maintain complete and compliant financial records according to organizational policies and generally accepted accounting principles (GAAP).
  • Lead the organization’s financial statement audit and Single Audit under Uniform Guidance by coordinating documentation, reviewing the Schedule of Expenditures of Federal Awards (SEFA), responding to auditor inquiries, and addressing any identified findings.
  • Collaborate with Program Directors to develop annual budgets and monitor expenditures against approved budgets.
  • Lead the preparation of the annual organization budget.
  • Provide variance analysis and financial forecasts to support strategic decision-making.
  • Prepare and present cashflow reports at weekly Finance meetings.
  • Prepare and present monthly, quarterly, and annual financial statements to the board of directors and executive team.
  • Ensure compliance with federal, state, and city financial reporting contract requirements and regulations.
  • Develop, implement, and monitor internal controls to safeguard the organization's assets.
  • Review and update financial policies and procedures to ensure continued relevance and compliance.
  • Identify potential financial risks and develop strategies to mitigate these risks.
  • In coordination with the Payroll team, ensure accurate and timely payment of salaries and wages and in compliance with all payroll tax regulations and reporting requirements.
  • Provide training and support to staff on financial policies, procedures, and accounting software.
  • Foster a culture of financial accountability and transparency across the organization.
  • Lead, mentor, and support the accounting team to foster high performance and staff development.
  • Conduct performance evaluations and facilitate professional development opportunities for finance staff.

Additional Duties And Responsibilities To Consider

  • Oversee grant accounting and ensure compliance with funding restrictions and reporting requirements.
  • Assist in the preparation and submission of financial reports to funders.
  • Prepare or oversee the preparation of IRS Form 990 and other tax filings.
  • Prepare financial reports for the board’s finance committee and attend board meetings as needed.
  • Monitor cash balances, manage bank relationships, and oversee cash flow planning.
  • Contribute to long-term financial planning and sustainability efforts.
  • Participate in strategic planning initiatives by providing financial modeling.
  • Monitor compliance with donor restrictions, funder guidelines, and organizational ethics policies.
  • Stay current on accounting standards, regulations, and best practices relevant to non-profits.
