3 ways to put the North Star metric into practice: First of all, WHY are we using NSMs? We want to build products that are valuable to the customers in a way that they drive business results. The NSM is one of different methods to make this connection between business goals and user outcomes through product value: 💠 It represents the value that the product delivers to its customers as expressed in the product vision. 💠 This value is supposed to be THE VALUE that when delivered more of will lead to business growth. BUT! The NSM stays a very theoretical concept if it’s not connected properly to the business value (i.e. revenue) on the one side and product outcomes/metrics on the other side. Worst case, it can even demotivate a team when they don't see it being used to make decisions in the daily work. 🎯 Here are 3 main ways (I've seen more) how to make it work in the daily work: 1️⃣ Check the leading indicators that you come up with (e.g. through impact mapping or a simple driver/metrics tree) against the input metrics. Do they pay into them? If yes to which one and how big is the effect? 2️⃣ Break the input metrics down in such a granularity that you already definite your metrics tree. Other activities like impact mapping or OST turn into a discovery activity then, or to go into the very tactical or operational level. 3️⃣ Create a KPI tree and the NSM tree and find out where they overlap (yes Itamar Gilad has a great article about this, I learned it from him (credits)), and this way you already have the connection to all directions. 👉 Examples AND a bonus see carousel. *Update: check out the perfect Delta solution in the comments* 🙇‍♂️💝 I had a really rough airport experience today; that could have easily been solved by better UI 🥺 I'm hosting a Product Operators / Leaders dinner in Denver tonight, but got denied boarding by Southwest Airlines and missed my flight from NYC 😱 I arrived at the gate right at the cutoff time (maybe 1 min early) but the gate attendant said I was too late to board ⛔️ I was like "WTF?!!?" Upon some challenge, I learned that they had already given my seat away *before* the cutoff to board and so couldn't let me on 😤😤😤 Attendant was super defensive and completely unhelpful -- telling me to go speak to someone outside the secure area. To me it was a sign they messed up and didn't want me to confront them about it 🫤 Apparently they had made a last call announcement but because I was still on the way to the gate I didn't hear it (it didn't play away from the gate) 👎 I had actually arrived at the airport well ahead of time and was working and cognizant of the time... I wasn't dawdling but also not running to the gate 🤦🏾‍♂️ I assumed it would be fine to arrive at the gate 20 mins after boarding starts because it normally takes that long to get folks onto the plane 😬 All of these missed expectations (and stress/anger) could have been prevented by some really simple improvements in the Southwest app and associated notifications: 1️⃣ The app shows the boarding time but not the gate closing time! If they had clearly stated the closing time then I'd know to arrive before. 2️⃣ It seems the cut-off time is actually before the gate closes; I wasn't even aware that I had to be there before to retain my seat (lesson learned) but I could have easily gotten a notification to arrive within X mins else my seat might be given away 3️⃣ Once I missed the flight the gate attendant told me to leave the secure area and talk to a customer service rep to deal with my ticket. But then I'd have to go back through to get another flight. There's nothing in the app that supports the flow of dealing with a missed flight.. surely it happens enough and it's been long enough to add this as an option! Just a reminder that good software design can make life a lot easier / less stressful and that everyone working on improving UI/UX is making a difference to people's happiness every day... so thank you! 💚 -- (Luckily a United Airlines rep was *much* more helpful 🙏 and I was able to get on a United flight that should get me there on time... I'm in the air now, so let's see! ✈️)

Personalization@Scale is so hard, almost impossible with past methods and paradigms of experimentation engines, CDPs, and slow websites. This is more brilliant and a simple UX...Let the customer tell you want they want or are thinking about and let the AI consider everything in your catalogue relevant to the request.

Retail *vacancies* are at a two-decade low. In other words, retail spaces are full. How can that be if there’s a retail Apocalypse? What’s taking up all of the retail space? 1. Entertainment and Retailtainment: -Pickleball Courts -Cannibis stores (Good heads up Robert Cogan.) -Ax Throwing -Topgolf 2. Ethnic stores, particularly serving: -Middle Eastern -Hispanics -Asians 3. Hot Retail Chains: -Nordstrom Rack -Harbor Freight -Dollar General -Ulta Beauty -7-Eleven -Walmart -Target -Aldi Yes, times are challenging. But there’s still a lot of buying. It just looks different. So if you don’t want to be in a retail apocalypse. How do you build a mission-led team after you find product-market fit? I had a great conversation with Dr. Christian Sprinkmeyer, Chief Product Officer for tonies®. “First it is about demonstrating product-market fit. But afterwards, it's really important to understand the ambition and the mission. And then it's crucial to build the organisation in a way that perfectly caters to this mission,” he says. Here’s here’s the key points from the case study: 1. You can find product-market fit with third party technology. But to keep innovating, you may need to own the technology. 2. Hire for the ambition, not the status quo. Bring in people to help you build the right culture. 3. The team structure needs to follow the strategy. For Tonies, this was enabling the growth in new markets, then improving the core product, then introducing new product innovations. 4. You need to find a balance between strategy and skills required when organising teams. For Tonies, their platforms nicely aligned with the customer journey. 5. Give teams missions, not feature sets. This enables you focus on user problems and create more customer impact more quickly. 6. Don’t try and introduce a new approach all at once. Use pilot teams to demonstrate the benefits of a new approach and find stepping stones like giving platform teams missions. 7. Use pilot teams as a way of helping the team learn new capabilities and skills. Share the approach to help the wider team learn. One of my favorite warmup discussions when kicking off a #productmanagement or #productmarketing course is around the definition of a "solution." I'd love to hear from all my #productmanager and #productmarketingmanager connections out there. There's no right or wrong answer! What happens when you combine AI, moving trucks, and hyperlocal advertising? Tombras partnered with PODS to transform its trucks into "Impossibly Smart Billboards" across New York City. ✅ 6,000 hyperlocal ads were created, each tailored to New York neighborhoods, using location, weather, time, and traffic data. ✅ PODS trucks became real-time digital billboards, displaying AI-generated headlines wherever they went. ✅ A custom AI suite, powered by Google Cloud, analyzed over 10,000 customer reviews, podcasts, and brand insights, transforming them into hyper-personalized messaging. The campaign covered all 299 NYC neighborhoods with hyper-personalized messaging. Results? A stunning 51% YoY lift in search volume and the biggest weekly percentage increase for 2024 in NYC What started as an "impossible" mission turned into a masterclass in combining AI with creative advertising.
