Updates

  • Today at the Geyer Family YMCA we had the pleasure to host New Jersey Assemblywoman Aura Kenny Dunn who represents New Jersey Legislative District 25. District 25 includes West Milford where our Outdoor Education Center is located. Assemblywoman Dunn began her tour by reading an age appropriate book about government and voting to our preschoolers. The group then toured the classrooms, pool, and gym. Our leadership team then shared with Assemblywoman Dunn information about New Jersey YMCA initiatives in youth and government programming for teens and life-saving safety around water classes for those children and adults who do not know how to swim or are just beginning. We want to thank Assemblywoman Dunn for taking the time to visit with us and learn more about these life changing programs that the YMCA offers to residents of New Jersey.

  • Our final Black History Month talk was delivered by Mr. John H. B. Houston on the significance of Chevalier de Saint-Georges, often referred to as the "Black Mozart," during the 1760s. Despite being an underdog in the world of music, Saint-Georges captivated audiences with his extraordinary talent and dedication. His remarkable compositions earned him comparisons to Mozart, a testament to the brilliance of his work. Today, his music is gaining well-deserved recognition across generations, ensuring that his legacy continues to resonate through the timeless beauty of his sound. We want to again thank our member, Dr. Ernestine Galloway, for arranging this insightful presentation.

  • We were honored to host a special screening of “Our Schools, Our Town” a documentary on the desegregation of the Montclair Public Schools and the history of the magnet school system. Masiel Rodriquez-Vars, producer of the film, and Dr. Carole Willis, a key architect of the plan and leader of the desegregation movement joined us for an important discussion after the screening. Also part of the conversation was our Teen Director, Naomi Wallace who went through the Montclair school system and Danny Morris, a former parent of Montclair school system students. Thank you all for your thoughtful contributions to our discussion and the event! See the film here: https://buff.ly/4kek9zK

  • This past Saturday, our Pathways program (ages 11-17) took an inspiring college tour at Princeton University, where they explored the possibilities that higher education can offer. Our boys are never too young to start envisioning their future—whether that be college or trade school—and this experience helped spark new aspirations for their journey ahead.
