Yale New Haven Hospital achieved a major medical milestone with the state’s first BATMAN (Basilica Technique with MitraClip for Anatomically Nonconforming) procedure, offering new hope for patients with severe mitral regurgitation (MR) and complex anatomical conditions. Medical education is tapping into the power of coaches. "Coaching is especially valuable in medical education,” says Dana Dunne, MD, director of coaching at Yale School of Medicine. “A lot of students arrive from college highly performance oriented, used to getting gold stars. They need to switch to a growth mindset, to be people who are comfortable recognizing what they don’t know. Coaching is a safe environment for doing that.” “The premise is that the person has the answers and the coach is there to help them come up with a plan to achieve their goals,” Dunne says. Coaching may help physician competency and even prevent burnout, according to research. In a new study, Yale School of Medicine researchers examined how the prevalence of neighborhood disadvantage differed according to individual-level characteristics and evaluated the association between neighborhood disadvantage and mortality among older people over the course of 10 years. While the researchers found that neighborhood disadvantage was associated with an 18 percent increase in mortality over 10 years, this association was no longer statistically significant after adjusting for participant socioeconomic characteristics. Published in JAMA Open Network, the research was funded by the National Institute of Minority Health and Health Disparities. https://brnw.ch/21wPoML
