The scale of our global water crisis cannot be ignored. #XPRIZEWaterScarcity Advisory Board Member Nidal Hilal highlighted some of the many water challenges we are currently facing in a piece for The National News. See some of the challenges below. ⬇️ https://lnkd.in/gWJva7b8 💧Over 700 million people have no access to clean water. 💧Climate change is accelerating the melting of glaciers—6.5 trillion tonnes of ice have been lost in 25 years, releasing toxic pollutants. 💧Water scarcity could displace over 700 million people by 2030. However, despite these challenges, the future is bright with new initiatives. XPRIZE Water Scarcity is a five-year, $119M global competition that is bringing together bold thinkers and breakthrough technologies to reshape the future of water. As we continue this mission, partnerships and support from sponsors like The Mohamed Bin Zayed Water Initiative play a crucial role in accelerating solutions. Join the movement. The key to fighting climate change might be right beneath our feet. 🪨 Six #XPRIZECarbonRemoval finalists are harnessing the power of rocks to lock away CO2 permanently, using processes like enhanced rock weathering (ERW) and mineralization. Out of the six finalists, four teams are pioneering ERW, a process that accelerates the natural reaction between CO2, water, and crushed rock to store carbon. While the core chemistry remains the same, each team’s approach is tailored to its geography, rock type, and mineral sources. Two other teams are innovating beyond ERW, exploring direct mineralization and mine tailing optimization to capture and store CO2 at scale. Here’s how the rock cohort is driving innovation in carbon removal: 🪨 Lithos Carbon (Durham, North Carolina, USA): Lithos sources mine tailings containing basalt rock and applies finely crushed dust to surrounding farms, using precision science to maximize carbon removal and track CO2 uptake. 🪨 Mati Carbon (Kanpur, India): Unlike other ERW teams, Mati works with basalt from the Deccan Traps, one of the world’s largest lava flows, spreading it across smallholder rice farms to remove CO2 while supporting local agriculture. 🪨 UNDO (Stirling, Scotland): UNDO partners with quarries to scale basalt-based ERW by integrating it into existing agricultural practices—expanding deployment across farms and tracking long-term carbon storage. 🪨 Silicate (Kilkenny, Ireland): Instead of using fresh basalt, Silicate leverages fast weathering carbonate-bearing materials, such as limestone and returned concrete—creating a carbon removal solution that removes CO2 rapidly, while enhancing soil productivity and pH. 🪨 Arca (Perth, Australia): Instead of spreading crushed rock on farmland, Arca is speeding up natural mineralization at mining sites. Their autonomous rovers move across piles of mine waste, adjusting moisture and surface conditions to help the rock absorb CO2 more efficiently. 🪨 Yuanchu (China): Yuanchu is pioneering Direct Air Mineralization (DAM), a process that captures CO2 directly from the air and converts it into stable, solid carbonates that remain locked away for over 1,000 years—offering a durable and scalable path to gigatonne-scale removal. From mine sites to farmlands, these teams are advancing scalable, durable carbon removal, helping to lay the foundation for gigatonne-scale solutions. 🌎 Watch this episode of our XPRIZE Carbon Removal docuseries to learn how these finalist teams are stabilizing the climate through their rock-based solutions. https://bit.ly/3QYzOWA
