💭Ever heard of a "carbon footprint"? Popularized by corporate campaigns, it shifted climate responsibility onto individuals. New WRI research reveals the limits of this thinking and the real key: government, industry, and collective action to make sustainable choices easier, cheaper and more accessible. 🔴From fires and floods to the destruction of critical ecosystems and the decline of iconic wild species, nature crimes are putting us at great risk. ↩️These crimes also undermine global cooperation on climate change, biodiversity and other environmental threats that are already hobbled by bureaucracy, funding cuts, and in some countries, an inward and xenophobic political turn. ⚡Organized criminal elements are exploiting these political currents to exploit the planet's living resources. But there are solutions. 👉Learn about 5 ways to halt nature crime: go.wri.org/ndb-li #nature #biodiversity #illegallogging #naturecrime #ecosystems #ecosystemdestruction #endangeredspecies #trafficking #climatechange #politics #climatesolutions #indigenouspeople #indigenouslands #goldmining #mining #illegalmining

New WRI research quantifies the most significant changes we could make to live more sustainably – with surprising results. For example, shutting off lights and composting aren’t high on the list. So which actions make the biggest difference? The four most impactful changes you can make are: 🚲Shift to sustainable ground travel – away from gas-powered cars 🚆Shift to air travel alternatives ☀️Install residential solar and increase home energy efficiency 🌱 Eating more plant-based meals There’s a catch, though. Our research shows without making those behaviors easier to adopt the possible impact is about 10%. Unlocking the remaining 90% will require more supportive government policies and industry practices, as well as our own collective action to make sustainable choices easier, cheaper and more accessible. For decades, GDP has been the primary metric by which we measure economic success. Global GDP’s growth — over 7,000% between 1960 and 2022 — has corresponded to an increased ability to meet material wants and needs. Overreliance on one metric to drive and monitor development has proved highly problematic, though. GDP does not reflect critical aspects of well-being, equity and sustainability, while metrics that track these dimensions point to severe degradation of nature and growing social inequality. 🌎 Heading to the United Nations Permanent Forum on Indigenous Issues (UNPFII)? Join us in New York! 🌎 Stop by UNDP to explore how to use data for land rights through the newly redesigned LandMark platform, the world’s first interactive global map of lands held by Indigenous Peoples and local communities: 🗓️ 23.04.2025 ⏰ 13:15 - 14:45 EST 🎫 Register: bit.ly/42uIhWK 📍 UNDP FF Building, 304 East 45th St (between 1st & 2nd Aves), Rio Conference Room, 9th Floor 🥗 Lunch will be provided! Since 2015, LandMark has served as a vital tool for making visible the lands and territories that Indigenous and local communities own or claim, helping assert rights, defend territories, and counter narratives that these lands are "vacant" or "idle." tIn 2024, LandMark launched a major update to offer new features and expanded coverage of Indigenous Peoples’ and local communities’ lands data in a continuing effort to increase recognition of these lands amid a sea of growing threats. 🌐 What we'll learn 🌐 : During the session, you'll meet collaborators from LandMark’s global consortium — a partnership of Indigenous- and community-led organisations and land rights allies — and learn more about how this platform is being used around the world to protect community land rights. You'll hear from: 🗣️ Katie Reytar from World Resources Institute 🗣️ Daniel Kobei from Ogiek Peoples' Development Program (OPDP) 🔗 To explore the platform, head to the link in our comments. 🙏 to World Resources Institute, Ogiek Peoples' Development Program, Asia Indigenous Peoples Pact, and the AIM4Forests programme for co-hosting the event! --- #LandRights #IndigenousPeoples #MappingJustice #CommunityLandRights #UNPFII #GeospatialData #LandMarkMap #UNPFII #Newyorkcityevents #socialjustice #indigenousrights #data #dataforchange #UNIndigenousForum #Indigenousvoices
